Grant Writing from a Former Funder's Perspective May 16, 2013 from 1:00pm - 4:00pm Featuring Randy Macon, The Center of Applied Research for Nonprofit Organizations & Former Program Staff for a Private Foundation Ahhh grantwriting... The word can cause extreme excitement or extreme apprehension. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum, we all recognize it is an important part of the development process. You have probably set through at least one (maybe more) sessions discussing the technical aspects of crafting grant proposals. This session will be different. Led by a former foundation program officer, this session is designed to be an interactive co-learning process. We will touch on the following topics: 1.) Tailoring your proposal to meet expectations; 2.) Telling your story in 15 simple steps (an emerging template); 3.) Tips for crafting budgets and other supporting documents. Bring along your organization's mission statement and any burning questions you may have. Come learn from a past pro! Please note: this session leader is a former program officer that is no longer associated with a foundation. Researchers from EPSCoR jurisdictions are eligible to apply for these resources by developing a collaboration with a University of Wyoming researcher. Interested researchers in EPSCoR jurisdictions without existing collaborators in Wyoming should feel free to contact me, and we can work together to identify potential collaborators. I can be reached at bshader at uwyo.edu The next deadline for Large Allocation requests is May 15. Large allocation requests require the submission of a 4-5 page allocation request, and are reviewed by an External Committee. More information, along with the online Large Allocation Request form can be found at http://www.uwyo.edu/nwsc/allocations/. An example of a Large Allocation Request is available at https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/sites/default/files/CHAP_Request_Sample_2.pdf. Tips on writing a request can be found at http://www.uwyo.edu/nwsc/_files/allocationtips.pdf. Large allocations granted will begin July 1 and be available for a year; with the possibility of renewal. Small allocations for HPC classes from researchers in EPSCoR states are also encouraged and available. Some additional information is given below. ----------------------------------------- Researchers are eligible to apply for an allocation; however, allocations must be linked to funded, peer-reviewed research projects in the atmospheric, earth system, geological and related sciences (see http://www.uwyo.edu/nwsc/eligibility/science_areas.html for a list of approved areas). Large allocations requests for computational, data analysis and visualization, and long-term storage are made and reviewed twice per year. The next deadline is Wednesday, May 15. There are essentially two types of allocations, small and large, and three types of resources: Computational, Data Analysis and Visualization, and Long-term Storage. If any part of an allocation request is large, then one must submit a Large Allocation Request. A computational allocation is large if it needs more than 200,000 core-hours; a DAV allocation is large if it needs more than 5000 core-hours; a long-term storage allocation is large if it needs more than 5 TB. Small allocations can be considered at any time. Further information about small allocations and the Small Allocation Request form can be found at http://www.uwyo.edu/nwsc/allocations/. Small allocations may be made for resources needed to prepare for a grant proposal, instructional needs, or benchmarking. An allocation request from a Wyoming researcher can include allocations for collaborating researchers from other US institutions who are PIs or senior personnel on the funded project. Large allocation requests can be made every six months, require the submission of 4-5 pages allocation request, and are reviewed by an External Committee. More information, along with the online Large Allocation Request form can be found at http://www.uwyo.edu/nwsc/allocations/ An example of a Large Allocation Request is available at https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/sites/default/files/CHAP_Request_Sample_2.pdf Rick Matlock Project Administrator Wyoming EPSCoR 424 Wyoming Hall Dept 3622, 1000 E. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected. We can't begin to fathom the level of devastation in the area. The loss of loved ones carries the heaviest of tolls. We know that so many families are displaced in this heart breaking situation. But we also know that Oklahomans are strong and generous, willing to help in tremendous ways. Nonprofit organizations are already part of the first wave of response, and I know that nonprofits will continue to help those in the days, weeks and months ahead. We support the first responders on the scene, and we ask that everyone in Oklahoma answer those calls to meet the needs of all of those affected by the storms. We are ever thankful to the generosity of the individuals, foundations and businesses supporting nonprofits, volunteering their time, and joining together to lend a strong hand to the families who have lost so much. We will continue to stay apprised of the situation and communicate with Oklahoma nonprofits about the emerging needs in Moore, Shawnee and other areas hit by the storms. Because of this, and because so many of our nonprofits, community partners, philanthropists and Oklahoma citizens want to show their support, we have created a website - OklahomaGives.org - to help nonprofits and supporters share their stories of support, communicate needs and show that Oklahoma is truly one of the greatest and most generous states in the country. In the coming days and weeks, we will post useful information as we receive it about the relief efforts in Moore and Shawnee, along with helpful guidance for nonprofits and supporters to come together and be "OK Strong!" We also want nonprofits to contact us about their needs so that they can best provide relief in the area. If your nonprofit organization* is providing any of the following: * Direct care or relief to residents in the area * Food, shelter or immediate services to those affected * A collection or drop-off point for necessary supplies * Volunteer coordination * Long-term assistance for families or businesses affected * Other services to help those in need Please contact Lindsey Fry at The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, and she will place your requests for assistance on the Oklahoma Gives site, as well as social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. *Organizations must have a 501c3 designation and registered with the Oklahoma Secretary of State. We hope that this is just one way we can continue supporting the nonprofits that make our state thrive. Nonprofits are the heart and life blood of Oklahoma, and we know that - because of your work - will we emerge from these tragedies. - Marnie Taylor Who is the Center? The campaign was announced today as U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined leaders from across the country to discuss innovation in education at the "Re-Imagining Education: Empowering Learners in a Connected World" summit. The summit, co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Education and MacArthur, brings together leaders from across the education sector to explore ways to develop learning experiences that better connect in-school and out-of-school time; better connect students to their passions, peers, communities and careers; and redesign our nation's high schools to prepare our students for a connected world of learning.
