Tech Trek is being held on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) campus in Weatherford from July 13-19, 2014. This is a joint collaboration between SWOSU and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Attached is our flier requesting math or science teachers' nomination of outstanding girls in seventh grade to attend Tech Trek. Please review the criteria and consider your nominees carefully - only FIVE nominations per school will be accepted. To nominate seventh grade girls, please use the attached or online form: http://techtrek-ok.aauw.net/forms/ ? Be sure to tell us in detail what makes your nominee(s) unique - only FORTY-EIGHT girls will attend Tech Trek! Thank you in advance for your assistance - we look forward to reviewing your outstanding nominees. For more information, go to http://techtrek-ok.aauw.net or email ttswosu@gmail.com Sincerely, Lisa Appeddu Emily Brewer Tech Trek Director Camper Coordinator (580)774-3148 (580)774-3201 Additional Information about Tech Trek: * Tech Trek has been in existence in California since 1998, serving more than 9,000 girls. In 2012, the National AAUW in cooperation with the California AAUW decided to expand Tech Trek nationwide. Members of the AAUW Weatherford branch, in partnership with SWOSU, were chosen as one of four pilot sights to host a Tech Trek camp outside of California. For 2014, there will be seven camps across the United States, including Tech Trek at SWOSU. * Tech Trek builds on AAUW's research report, "Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math" (see www.aauw.org/learn/research/whysofew.cfm), which demonstrated that camps like Tech Trek improve girls' interest and confidence in STEM areas. Girls benefit greatly from exposure to STEM role models, as well as to other girls like themselves who have an aptitude for math and science. Camp activities also allow them to experience and potentially succeed at a variety of STEM concepts and skills in a supportive environment. * At Tech Trek at SWOSU, girls attend interactive lectures in the STEM fields, participate in hands-on workshops, learn professional etiquette, and take a field trip to the Stafford Air & Space Museum. Girls are able to investigate career options in STEM fields, as well as gain real world insight into the applications of STEM to everyday life. The camp culminates with an awards and recognition banquet, during which the girls' families share in the experiences and achievements of Tech Trek. * The only cost of Tech Trek is a $50 reservation fee. Submit to http://bit.ly/1cX0iL4 5th Annual Promoting Undergraduate Research Conference for Faculty, Staff and Administrators Sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education April 11, 2014 (8:30 am to 4:00 pm) Presbyterian Health Foundation Conference Center (655 Research Parkway, OKC) PROMOTING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH MODELS AT EVERY LEVEL: INQUIRY, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, ASSESSMENT AND RETENTION Research and creative activities provide the critical opportunity for students to fully engage in their education, facilitating a journey of discovery that bridges the gap between knowledge and experience. The 2014 conference will revisit effective models of inquiry with a focus on community engagement, effective models of assessment of undergraduate research outcomes and student retention, and examine student research projects illustrating these models. The conference will be organized into three categories of panel presentations: 1. Faculty and Administrators sharing Models of Undergraduate Community Engagement and Inquiry: If you have experience with a model of developing undergraduate student inquiry through research, especially focusing on and engaging in the community, please consider joining this panel to share your model and insight. We are looking for novel and/or effective approaches designed to encourage students to engage in community-based research in a wide variety of contexts. Presentation: 15-20 minutes. 2. Faculty and Administrators sharing Models of Undergraduate Research Program Assessment: If you have experience with assessment of undergraduate student research program outcomes, please consider joining this panel to share your model and insight. We are looking for effective approaches designed to provide quantifiable and qualitative assessment models. Presentation: 15-20 minutes. 3. Students sharing Perspectives on Research: The conference steering committee is seeking undergraduates representing all tiers of higher education who will share their perspectives on their research focusing in the community in the areas of arts, agriculture, humanities, journalism, business, behavioral science, education, and STEM topics. We are seeking a total of 12-15 students (4-5 for each Student Panel listed in the schedule below). Presentation: 7-10 minutes. Presentation at the Promoting Undergraduate Research Conference ? Faculty and administrator panels will be approximately 75 minutes in length with part of the time set aside for questions and dialogue. Presentations may include PowerPoint slides for visual support of major concepts and findings. Projectors and computers will be provided. If three panelists comprise the panel, each panelist will have approximately 15 minutes for their presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A. More or less time will be available if more or fewer panelists are selected. 2 Guidelines: Conference registration for all presenters and Presentation proposals for faculty and administrator panels must? Be submitted at http://bit.ly/1cX0iL4 no later than March 14, 2014 (please copy and paste url into your browser). If you have questions before, you may contact Lmason at osrhe.edu. The online form will ask you to: ? Provide an abstract of no more than 100-150 words (faculty/administrator panels only). ? Provide basic contact information. ? Include a one-paragraph biography (all presenters). ? Specify the target panel: o Models of Undergraduate Community Engagement and Inquiry (Inquiry) o Models of Undergraduate Research Assessment (Assessment) o Undergraduate Researcher (Student) Selection Criteria ? The Steering Committee will select faculty and administrator proposals considering the broadest representation of undergraduate research assessment and inquiry models from across the state. We are seeking clear and replicable methodology for the assessment and inquiry models. We aim to include a wide range of disciplines from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and arts. We are not looking for proposals to present individual students? research projects. Important Note: ? Selection carries the obligation of presenting. ? Presenters must register for the conference; registration is $50 for faculty and $75 for administrators?POs, checks and cash are acceptable. Student panelists will not have a registration fee. ? A selection committee of the Undergraduate Research Conference Steering Committee will review proposals and select panelists for the conference with notification by March 26, 2014. NSF Releases Latest Science and Engineering Indicators Report: The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released its latest version of the biennial collection of facts and figures on science and engineering education and careers in the US. The 2014 edition describes in detail the state of science in the US and the country's relative ranking among global competitors. It draws from surveys conducted by NSF or work that it has funded, as well as data from other sources vetted by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES). The report notes continued scientific progress by China and other Asian nations as measured by a number of indices, from high-tech manufacturing to research spending to training the next generation of scientists and engineers. "The longstanding dominance of the United States continues to erode," said Dan Arvizu, chair of the National Science Board, of the report and its findings. "Other countries have been building up their research capacity very rapidly, and this report shows how fast this new world is arriving." The report boasts 600 pages of text and graphics and a 939-page appendix of tables. It is available at http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/seind14/.
