Recently, we uncovered a helpful section of the CFDA website focusing on writing stellar proposals. CFDA or the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is a government-wide compendium of Federal programs, projects, services and activities providing assistance or benefits to the American public. It contains financial and nonfinancial assistance programs administered by departments and establishments of the federal government. The handy online information is broken into two parts: (1) Developing a Grant Proposal; and (2) Writing the Grant Proposal. The Grant Advisors find some interesting tidbits. A good example is CFDA?s following recommendation: Individuals without prior grant proposal writing experience may find it useful to attend a grantsmanship workshop. A workshop can amplify the basic information presented here. Applicants interested in additional readings on grantsmanship and proposal development should consult the references listed at the end of this section and explore other library resources. The key term in this recommendation is ?grantsmanship workshop.? This is a unique way to describe technical assistance programs at the federal level, which is never used in the actual solicitation. A Google search for the term turns up several upcoming and existing workshops at various federal agencies including: ? Nat?l Institute of Nursing Research at the Nat?l Institutes of Health (Health & Human Services Department) ? Nat?l Institute of Food Agriculture at the Food & Nutrition Service (Agriculture Department Those interested in finding hidden technical assistance for their favorite funding programs can contact Grant Advisors at (410) 934-7652 or askthegrantadvisors at gmail.com raysweeney | March 4, 2014 at 10:02 am | Categories: Tips | URL: http://wp.me/p4gbvs-3o Comment See all comments Unsubscribe to no longer receive posts from The Grant Advisors. In true White House fashion (see the recent My Brother's Keeper program), the administration isn't waiting around for action by Congress, instead attracting private dollars to fund its wishes. Last month, the White House held a College Opportunity Summit to announce its private funding commitments. At the event, 150 universities, businesses and nonprofits made concrete commitments to reduce inequality in access to higher education and "help every hardworking kid go to college and succeed when they get to campus." The following organizations have committed $5 million for College Summit's ScholarJob: Deloitte, Darden Restaurants, Walmart, AT&T, Mutual of America, and the Samberg Family Foundation. The new initiative will help low-income students connect getting an education with getting a great career. This year, with an investment from the Bezos Family Foundation, ScholarJob volunteers will partner with College Summit student Peer Leaders to scale up the program, equipping more than 100,000 high school students from low-income communities in 10 cities with cutting-edge technology to help them explore careers and to attend and complete college. In particular, I wanted to highlight a few events that, as a member of our URPD Division, I think that you might find most interesting: * Keynote Addresses by Dr. Wayne Clough, Secretary of the Smithsonian; Muriel Howard, President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities; Liz Lerman of the Liz Lerman Dance Company; and Christopher Austin, Director of Translational Research at the National Institutes of Health * Presentation by Catherine A Snelling, Sophie Karanicolas, John Willison, from the University of Adelaide on Enhanced alumni: developing graduate attributes using a scaffolded research skills framework * Presentation on Symposia for all: building discussions from the matrix of undergraduate research presentation opportunities at UMBC by Kathy Lee Sutphin and Janet McGlynn of the University of Maryland Baltimore County * Presentation by Robin S. Lewis, Doreen E Sams, Rosalie Richards, Caitlin Powell (Saint Mary's College of California), Rebecca McMullen, Jennifer Hammack, and Larry Bacnik, all of Georgia College and State University (unless otherwise noted) on Open Re-sourcing: Higher Education Mentoring Handbook * Presentation on Establishing A Learning Community for Mentors of Undergraduate Researchers by Jennifer Harris and Janice DeCosmo of the University of Washington * Panel Presentation on Best Practices in Managing Campus-wide Undergraduate Research Initiatives at Larger Institutions by a great panel: Megan Shannahan (Michigan State University), Korine Wawrzynski (Michigan State University), Julie Morris (University of South Carolina-Columbia), Kimberly Schneider (University of Central Florida, and Helene Cweren (Ohio State University) * Panel Presentation on Creative Funding Sources for Undergraduate Research: It 's Not Just About Grants, by Michael P. Castellani (Marshall University), David Brakke (James Madison University), Marilyn Hart (Minnesota State University, Mankato), Mark L. Biermann (Wartburg College), and Robert F. Rycek (University of Nebraska at Kearney) * Workshop by Sumana Datta (Texas A & M University) and Robert Walsh (Scholastica) on IT Support for Undergraduate Research Journals * Lunch book discussion will feature 8 books, all of which could be used to foster discussions with undergraduates about the value of research. Two of my favorites from the list are Edible History of Humanity by Tom Standage (perfect for lunch!) and David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell. * Panel discussion by provosts from various institutions, discussing how we can help administrators see undergraduate research as a priority. * The URPD division reception is always a highlight, and a great way to meet others with the same interests as you. If you are brand-new or an old hand at leading undergraduate research programs, you are welcome and encouraged to join us! Since it's Washington DC, I also wanted to point out that reduced rate hotel rooms are available through the 4th of July. You'll be just a few blocks from the national mall (with free concerts and of course the fireworks on Independence Day), the Smithsonian museums, and the exciting restaurants and shopping in the Penn Quarter neighborhood. Truthfully, with over 100 events and 80 posters, I had a hard time picking only a few events to showcase here because so much seemed relevant to what we do. Since URPD members are involved in every aspect of undergraduate research on our campus, I'm sure you'll find much more! I encourage you to peruse the program. Early registration ends April 4th, so click here to start planning your attendance at CUR2014! Looking forward to seeing you in Washington this summer! The 2014 conference will revisit effective models of inquiry with a focus on community engagement, effective models of assessment of undergraduate research outcomes and student retention, and examine student research projects illustrating these models. The conference will be organized into three categories of panel presentations: 1. Faculty and Administrators sharing Models of Undergraduate Community Engagement and Inquiry: If you have experience with a model of developing undergraduate student inquiry through research, especially focusing on and engaging in the community, please consider joining this panel to share your model and insight. We are looking for novel and/or effective approaches designed to encourage students to engage in community-based research in a wide variety of contexts. Presentation: 15-20 minutes. 2. Faculty and Administrators sharing Models of Undergraduate Research Program Assessment: If you have experience with assessment of undergraduate student research program outcomes, please consider joining this panel to share your model and insight. We are looking for effective approaches designed to provide quantifiable and qualitative assessment models. Presentation: 15-20 minutes. 3. Students sharing Perspectives on Research: The conference steering committee is seeking undergraduates representing all tiers of higher education who will share their perspectives on their research focusing in the community in the areas of arts, agriculture, humanities, journalism, business, behavioral science, education, and STEM topics. Presentations may include PowerPoint slides for visual support of major concepts and findings. Projectors and computers will be provided. If three panelists comprise the panel, each panelist will have approximately 15 minutes for their presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A. More or less time will be available if more or fewer panelists are selected. You may join me if you let me know by 4-8-14. It is audio only, and I do not know the quality of this company. It is a topic of interest, so I am exploring the value. Hope to see you here. Since it is audio only, I will not be able to take conference calls for it. Perhaps we could use MOVI since it does not use a telephone line. Just let me know if you want to attend. You can sign up to receive it yourself for $99. Linda Mason 4/10/2014 Audio conference: Creating the Structure to Secure Capital Funding Grantseekers still have the incorrect notion that capital funds are those unattainable dollars reserved for the select few. The truth is federal and private funders are increasingly loosening their funding priorities to offer capital funding. Yes, even federal agencies are warming to capital funding for trendy issues including manufacturing innovations, homeless, creative placemaking and minority/higher education achievement. Grantseekers just need to know where to look for funding, what to say when reaching out to decision-makers and what to include in applications to secure these capital funds.
