January 29th is my last official day. I have been asked when you can stop sending me grant announcements for the newsletter, GRANT NEWS. The official last one is this month, so if you have not sent your list of grants to me yet, please do so that I can put out a January GRANT NEWS before or by January 29th. However, the plan is that I will come back in April to work part time for OSRHE, and one of the few things I will do is publish GRANT NEWS. I will also publish the Grant Opportunities list. So take a break in February and March, and get back with me for grant announcements for your institution in April. I like to get the list before the 27th of each month and prefer that you send a photo of the Principle Investigator for each grant project. See you later! Hello, The Lupus Foundation of Minnesota (LFM) provides undergraduates interested in basic or clinical research an opportunity to work with an established faculty researcher at various institutes, including the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic. Since 1981, LFM has provided college students with the unique opportunity to partner with accomplished researchers at local institutions working on lupus-related autoimmune research. Fellows execute experiments, perform literature searches and conduct corresponding research in tandem with the principal investigator. The goal of the project is to inspire a new generation of researchers committed to discovering better treatments and a cure. To date, support from individual donors has provided 118 fellows with the opportunity to work on vital research efforts aimed at improved detection, treatment and a cure. Fellowships typically begin in June and conclude in mid-August when the fellows complete a final report, which addresses the initial project proposal and research question, and they provide a brief public presentation of their research to program colleagues, LFM board members and staff , supporters, friends, and the public. Candidates are now invited to apply for the 2016 Student Summer Fellowship Program (click http://www.lupusmn.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/LFMSummerFellowshipApplication-2016.doc to download the application). Completed applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. Monday, February 1. Candidates will be notified of placement by mid-March. Commonly used quantitative metrics (such as "success" rates) fail to provide meaningful information about the true impact of our work, given its complexity and the realities of dropping funding rates. Many of us have the opportunity to chart the course of how we will be evaluated at our institutions, but the question remains: What measures of success should we use, and how should we evaluate them? In this webinar we will describe several evidence-based tools for use in internal evaluation and illustrate selected approaches with examples from actual evaluations of the Offices of Research Administration and Research Development at Tufts University. In particular, this session will highlight the utility of using satisfaction as the key metric in assessing the success of a research development office. We will offer practical tips for developing an evaluation of your own Research Development efforts, and detail the process of developing, designing, implementing, and assessing the results of a satisfaction survey. Sarah Marina is an Assistant Director in the Tufts University Office of Research Development. She has eight years of professional experience in the research development field, centering on proposal development and strategy, and program design and implementation. Her current research focus is on the development methods for the evaluation of offices of research development and/or administration. She completed a certificate in Program Evaluation at Tufts University in 2012, where she is currently a masters candidate in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning. The new law replaces the last ESEA reauthorization, the controversial No Child Left Behind (NCLB) that was passed in 2002. While NCLB increased the role of the federal government in education decision-making, ESSA reduces the federal role, while restoring greater local control over education funding decision. ESSA authorizes new funding programs and make changes to existing funding programs. The following information-packed presentation will offer insights on the new funding, as well as crucial details on the direction of existing funding programs and how grantseekers can offer insights on the direction of their favorite funding programs.
