school year data from the Public Elementary/Secondary Agencies Universe
Survey of the Common Core of Data (CCD) survey system. This First Look
presents data on local education agencies within the <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region>
and the territories in the 2008-09 school year. Findings include:<br>
<br>
• There were 17,735 operating local education agencies in the 2008-09
school year, and among those agencies, 13,809 were regular school
districts.<br>
<br>
• Approximately 783,000 students enrolled in the 2,096 independent
charter agencies, districts in which all schools were charter schools.<br>
<br>
• Twenty-six of the 13,809 active regular school districts enrolled
100,000 or more students.<br>
<br>
