Our school is struggling with attendance. What is your attendance policy and how are you enforcing the rules? Rewards/Consequences???

1) We, at Eufaula High School, have a policy that rewards our students with being able to be exempt from semester tests. I have included our handbook section for exemptions below.
Exemptions for Semester Test:
● Students with three or fewer absences and a grade average of 90% and up in addition to zero discipline incidents resulting in Saturday School, ISP, and/or suspensions will be exempt.
● Students with two or fewer absences and a grade average of 80 % and up in addition with zero discipline incidents resulting in Saturday School, ISP, and/or suspension will be exempt.
● Students with one absence and a grade of 70% and up in addition with zero discipline incidents resulting in Saturday School, ISP, and/or suspensions will be exempt.
● For the purpose of awarding exemptions only, 3 tardies in a class period will equal one absence for that class period.
● Students may elect to take the semester test in order to raise their grade. The test grade will only count if it improves the student’s overall grade,
● Activity absences, funeral absences (death of an immediate family member), college visit absences (students are only allowed 2), and KTC/Concurrent enrollment absences will not count against exemptions.

2) We send out a letter that outlines the attendance policy of the school, the ramifications for truancy (we have a DA that prosecutes truancy), as well as how chronic absenteeism affects the student's learning.

Also, as a reward for good attendance we allow students who have As in all of their classes with three or fewer absences in all of their classes to be exempt from semester exams and not have to come to school on those days. If they have Bs in all of their classes with two or fewer absences in all of their classes, they are exempt from semester exams and do not have to come to school on those days. We record these absences as qualifying absences in our SMS.
