TEST can be upgraded any time. It looks like the best time to upgrade PROD is the 3rd week in December (15-21) or the 1st week in January (4-7). If we can schedule an off-hours time in the 2nd half of May, that would be acceptable too. If you expect a roll-out of after-hours installation services before May, would you schedule an upgrade on PROD for that timeframe? We would cancel before the end of March if we find a concern on TEST. Does that sound good everyone? I hope this helps. Chris OCU Academic Calendar and Comments about D2L Upgrades Dates when classes are in session: Fall 2012: Aug 20-Dec 18 Nursing doctorial intensive: Jan 3rd-5th Spring: Jan 9th-May 10th Nursing doctorial intensive: May 30th-June 1st Summer (All sessions): May 13th-Aug 2nd Fall 2013: Aug 19th Worst time to upgrade: The week before school starts in the Fall because it is just too chaotic, and the issue with trying to squeeze in between is that we have programs that go beyond our regular school hours like the nursing doctorial. It wouldn?t quite so bad if we could upgrade during off hours. If we can do that, then times like in between the last week in May and first week of June wouldn?t be too bad. Best times to upgrade: Jan: beginning of the first week before the 3rd or the 2nd week Dec: 3rd week August: 2nd week Other comments: Same comment as Karen. SWOSU Academic Calendar and Comments about D2L Upgrades Dates when classes are in session: Fall 2012: August 22 ? December 21 Spring 2013: January 9 ? May 11 Summer 2013: June 4 ? July 31 Fall 2013: August 21 ? December 20 Worst time to upgrade: Within a week of school starting in August. We have some interim courses between spring and summer, and summer and fall but those can be handled with prior notice via News announcements. Best times to upgrade: May: 2nd half Jan: 1st week Dec: 3rd week Other comments: Maybe Cary can provide pricing if we?re interested in ?after hours? upgrades. Rose Academic Calendar and Comments about D2L Upgrades Dates when classes are in session: Fall: Roughly August 20th ? December 15th Spring: Roughly January 20th ? May 18th Summer: Most of June and July Interim: We have interim courses in session at all in-between times. Worst time to upgrade: August. We have interim courses. Many faculty ignore communication about upgrade until it is impending. An August date is too far in the future for most faculty to be concerned. Then, they return from summer break and it is too late. Best times to upgrade: May: 2nd half Jan: 1st week Dec: 3rd week Other comments: If D2L rolls out after hours upgrades, it may open more options. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I really came away feeling more confident that the relationship with consortium members SWOSU and OCU and the D2L instance hosted by OneNet is best for Rose State College and its users. We have strength in our consortium to support one another. I would like to thank the staff at OneNet for the excellent preparations to provide valuable and reassuring information at our meeting. More importantly, I would like to thank OneNet for the diligence and care with which they manage and maintain our D2L instance to keep it running as smoothly as possible. I think the plans and progress we have made incrementally over the years, just moved into warp drive today. I think D2L may actually be contacting OneNet in a few months for steps to improve their own hosting services. :) Our plans to slow the pace of upgrades will allow our users time to digest features and feel more stability in the platform. Using the planned outage in January to upgrade our server O.S. is brilliant, Frank. I hope we can do that when you learn the details of what is involved. I believe we have a better picture of how our D2L instance operates and how we can communicate issues more efficiently. OneNet's steps to monitor the server and the planned notification system will put my mind at ease that the correct people will be notified quickly at OneNet and member schools when there is a problem. For those interested in going to FUSION, the web address is http://www.desire2learn.com/fusion/. I suggest reserving a room in the conference hotel now with a credit card. The block of rooms will sell out quickly. Perhaps at our next meeting, as of yet unscheduled, we might be ready for more of an idea sharing and discussion about guidelines to lighten the load on our server. We tentatively said we would meet sometime in March. Frank, if you recommend that we hold off and just apply any service packs that are available on January 2nd, I defer to your experience with these things. It seems like a lot of hurdles to cram in the next few days for this to be pulled off smoothly. We do want a smooth procedure. The downside to applying service packs on PROD now is that our TEST and our PROD are now on two different versions. The TEST is on 10.1.0 and PROD is on 10.0.0. Cary, what does D2L recommend for applying service packs to PROD when they cannot be applied on TEST first? I have spoken with Cary to schedule a conference call with D2L's techincal services team to discuss how much downtime an OS upgrade would incur. We will also discuss the pros and cons of doing an OS upgrade while Test and Prod are on different versions. Chris, Karen and Beth I will let you know when the conference call is and have you participate if you are available. It may be this afternoon. I'm fine with that as long as there isn't a pressing reason to get this ball rolling sooner. It seems that we must upgrade PROD to 10.1 (which may not happen until January, 2014) before we upgrade the server O.S. That means the O.S. upgrade won't happen until May, 2014. Frank and Cary, is this a likely scenario? Are there technical problems with the wait? To answer the specific question below - we recommend getting Prod up to 10.1. I had not counted on D2L support being involved so much that they would require a fee and that you would need a PO. This project would definitely be a priority before any other major upgrades. We could plan on an O.S. upgrade in May or August. The notice is listed at the bottom of this email. Concerning the possibility of performing an upgrade on Jan 2nd, I submitted the request to Cary on 12/11 and Cary said it can take sometime to get a final quote. Cary informed me today the he should have a final quoted cost OneNet will incur to migrate to the new 2008 servers tomorrow, Dec. 21. The most important question now, assuming I get a PO and D2L can schedule the work for test next week and production on Jan. 2nd, is everyone comfortable with having a short time to test the upgrade before we upgrade production? If D2L can upgrade our test system by Dec. 27th, that will give everyone 5 calendar days to test. I am ok with this since we are not changing the app just upgrading the server OS. Please provide feedback, since I know in lieu of the OS upgrade we may want to have D2L apply a service pack.
