Hey Guys and Gals,
I'm John Jackson, a Network Engineer at OneNet. I'm going to try and send
every now and again little tidbits about OneNet and the OneNet network. I
hope to spark some questions from you and conversation between all of you.
Here are some little known facts about the OneNet Network.
Routing Hardware: We are in the middle of a major upgrade. We are
replacing Cisco 7500's with Cisco 7600's. What most people don't know is
that the 7600's is exactly the same Hardware as a Cisco Catalyst 6500. In
fact some of the routers shipped, some shipped with a 7600 and some with a
6500 label. We use a mix of Supervisor2's and Supervisor720's. The Sup2's
have a 32 Gig Bus backplane, and the 720's have a 720 Gig SwitchFabric.
This will allow for a lot of future growth. We have had some of the 7500's
for nearly 10 Years, so we need to buy to last. I would have to say one of
the best features of the 7600 is the hot swap capability. We can swap out
any card hot, and the box continues to forward traffic on the other cards.
Routing Protocols: We are running a mix of OSPF and BGP. We used to run
EIGRP. It was great and easy to use. However, we just pushed it to its
limit with 50+ routers and 1000's of routes. I would highly recommend
EIGRP for small to medium networks. Now we use OSPF to handle routes
between loopback interfaces on our routers, and iBGP to handle customer
routes internally, and eBGP to handle connections to the Internet,
Internet2, and for special cases with customers.
Have questions? Send them to the list. OneNet (and hopefully others on the
list) will work to find the right answers for you.
What else would you like to know about OneNet?
Tell us about what you are doing on your network.
If this sparks interest I'll send more tidbits like this out.
Thanks for reading
John
