While it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, it makes for a flashy
headline: Virgin Mobile USA to Offer WiMAX Services
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Trendsmedia/33f3158a9b/23df7e6f6d/e3429c53f4> .
Virgin, of course, already uses Sprint's network in its MVNO
relationship with the carrier so extending the relationship to include a
WiMAX-based data offering from Xohm is not too much of a leap. That's
especially true after Virgin Mobile USA's recent acquisition of premium
content and services MVNO Helio.
Pre-Helio, a Virgin Mobile USA WiMAX offering would not fit too well
with the carriers other core offering--prepaid voice. Now that Virgin
has Helio though, its new, advanced device portfolio and rugged postpay
platform could certainly benefit from faster data speeds.
Virgin Mobile USA said it will be doing due diligence in the coming
months as Sprint's planned WiMAX buildout comes to fruition. Virgin
wants to evaluate whether a WiMAX offering is in its customers' best
interests and, if so, how and when to introduce WiMAX-based services.
Virgin post-Helio announced its first new product this past week: An
EVDO phone called the Shuttle and a couple of new data plans. Could
Virgin launch a WiMAX phone this time next year?
Virgin Mobile's interest in WiMAX isn't the only sign that the WiMAX
sector still has some momentum, CNET is carrying an interview with Intel
EVP Sean Maloney about WiMAX, LTE and emerging markets.
"LTE is pretty similar technology (to WiMax) in many, many ways. It's
some way off," Maloney said. "We'll see what happens with that. ... All
these technologies are useful. If I can't get a signal, I love EV-DO, I
use EV-DO, I use all these things. But we're comfortable that WiMax is
going to augment these things by being a lot quicker. We still feel
comfortable it was the right program and we're making progress on it."

Vodafone could use WiMAX in Qatar
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Trendsmedia/33f3158a9b/23df7e6f6d/e579b27502>
One of Vodafone's key growth strategies is to move into fixed line
broadband and fixed/mobile convergence. While it has been buying or
partnering with fixed operators in many of its key territories, it can
make faster progress in new areas where it can acquire providers more
cheaply and has a more open market to play for. So as part of its Middle
Eastern push, it has bought a fixed line license in Qatar to add to the
mobile franchise it gained last December, in a ploy that is likely to be
a blueprint for many countries in the EMEA region. What's more, the
license includes a mandate to provide WiMAX, at least for fixed data
services, in a bid to increase broadband penetration rapidly.
While Vodafone has not shown much interest in WiMAX in its heartlands,
it has worked with the technology for fixed/mobile convergence trials
and in some newer territories, including through its Middle East joint
venture with Zain, based in Bahrain. In Qatar, the regulator, ictQatar,
has decided to package WiMAX with the new fixed line license to give the
new entrant a differentiation over incumbent Qatar Telecom. Also,
according to the agency's executive director William Fagan, the
decision was taken because "Qatar is too small to have a separate WiMAX
licensee ... or for a WiMAX operator to compete with two fixed line
operators."

Sprint keeps Xohm WiMAX-only, confusing its dual-mode strategy
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Trendsmedia/33f3158a9b/23df7e6f6d/7a4fdae06b>
Sprint Nextel will gain many advantages from spinning off its Xohm WiMAX
unit - shared cost and risk with Clearwire, additional spectrum hoards
and so on. But there are some downsides to the loss of full control too,
and one of them is highlighted by the initial device roll-out strategy.
Sprint will offer WiMAX-only products under the Xohm brand, which will
be merged into the Clearwire joint venture around year end if all goes
smoothly. But the market has been most excited about dual-mode
CDMA/WiMAX gadgets, and these will appear soon, but only under Sprint's
primary brand. This indicates the dilemma - how to position and market a
mobile broadband service that is no longer entirely Sprint's, and could
compete with, as well as stimulate, its CDMA services.
According to interviews between Sprint executives and online news
service Unstrung, a dual-mode laptop card will be launched before year
end, although possibly not in time for the initial commercial Xohm
service in Baltimore, Maryland. Dual-mode handsets are expected around
mid-2009. The laptop card will almost certainly be the most useful and
desirable product for anyone wanting to use WiMAX on the road or in its
truly mobile guise, as heavily championed by Sprint even as most of the
world's deployment concentrate, for the time being at least, on portable
and fixed access. So why will it not be closely associated with Xohm, as
a means of attracting early adoption by the most valuable customer base
for any portable broadband solution, the 'road warriors', who spend
large sums on always-available access, often with corporate support.
