The summer season has come to a close and campuses are once again in full swing, experiencing a new energy that only a new school year offers. That changeover mimics what the CURC Board will be also experiencing in the Fall. The Board will go "back to school" and convene its annual retreat in Eugene, Oregon on the University of Oregon campus. Usually held in the summer, the 2014 Board retreat will be held in the days leading up to the CURC Workshop and annual AASHE Conference in Portland. During the retreat, the Board will work on updating the CURC by-laws, focus on the 2015 budget and programs, review the sponsorship program and MOUs with partners and much more. CURC is fortunate to continue utilizing the talents of experienced Board members. Earlier this year, the following Board members were re-appointed another 3 year term: Andrew Lentini, Erica Spiegel, BJ Tipton, and Robyn Hathcock. For 2014-2015, two officer positions were filled through re-appointment: Treasurer - Christine VonKolnitz Cooley and Chair - Robyn Hathcock. New appointments are: Vice-Chair - Andrew Lentini and Secretary - Travis Freidman. These officer positions make up the CURC Executive Committee. Many thanks go to Dave VanDeventer and BJ Tipton for serving in these positions previously and for their continued commitment to the CURC Board. We look forward to meeting and seeing many of you in Portland, Oregon this year. Hope to see you there! Feature Article [http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs114/1102801309258/img/393.png] A Perspective from Canada By Ophelia Morris, CURC Board Member, Waste Prevention Coordinator, University of Manitoba, Canada I have been working in Waste Prevention since 1998 attempting to educate and motivate others to see waste as a resource as opposed to just something we just throw away. I have brought together many groups of volunteers to aid in promoting and communicating the 3R's and I have started many waste prevention programs throughout my career. That said, I have never found it more difficult to bring together a group of people to gain momentum in public awareness on waste then I do at the university level. Students start out the September term very interested in events on campus and how to get involved but by November the mid-terms begin and interest wanes. Most seem to want a very short, time specific duty to carry out and there is little interest in longer term commitments or in being a part of the campuses programs. This led me to wonder if it is only the university that I work with or if this is a common trend across other campuses. When I look to competitions geared toward campuses such as RecycleMania, I don't see many Canadian universities signed up compared to our southern neighbors who have appear to have embraced these competitions wholeheartedly. Maybe different provinces hold competitions throughout the year that universities value more than cross country competitions? I have yet to come across any evidence of this and certainly there is nothing monumental happening in my province to pull campuses together in friendly competition. The one place that we see unity among provinces and campuses though is during National Waste Reduction Week when the provincial councils come together to promote waste reduction. However, there are no nation-wide challenges or competitions and there isn't a sense of competitiveness even at the provincial level. Why do we have this lack of competitiveness within the Canadian universities and colleges when universities and colleges elsewhere seem to embrace it? One challenge to the lack of competitiveness may be the absence of an umbrella organization that could bring the post-secondary institution recycling units under one network to share knowledge, mistakes, lessons learned and to simply ask questions. There are a variety of networks and/or associations that bring universities together at a broader sustainability level however, no Canadian association brings together solid waste and recycling on university campuses quite the way that the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC) does within the American institutes. CURC has existed as a separate entity since 2009 and has come a long way to establish an exchange of technical knowledge and best practices on recycling and waste reduction programs among institutions of higher learning. It has a membership of over 900 institutions only 10 of which are Canadian. Does the involvement in CURC, along with Game Day Challenge and RecycleMania assist institutions to increase their recycle rate? Does their involvement in these coalitions and competitions help students feel a part of larger movement? Do Canadian universities feel provincially or national connected? Should Canadian institutions join together to create our own Canadian branded network, or tap into larger North American resources that already exist and that some of us are already a part of? I will attempt to seek answers from other institutions on these questions for the Fall CURC newsletter and welcome any feedback, comments or experiences that any North American college or university would like to share with me at wpo at umanitoba.ca Field Notes from CS3 Summit [http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs114/1102801309258/img/394.png] On June 24-26, 2014, CURC co- Sponsored the 4th annual Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit. The two-day summit was held at Folsom Field, home of the University of Colorado-Boulder Buffaloes, in scenic Boulder, CO. Over 150 attendees representing colleges, universities, and organizations attended this year's Summit. [http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs114/1102801309258/img/397.jpg] The first day, tour registrants saw the University of Denver's Ritchie Center, a zero waste, energy efficient, multipurpose sports complex, and the Pepsi Center, home of the Denver Nuggets. The Summit plenary sessions included programming on fan engagement, sponsorship activation, behavior change research, and more. Game Day Challenge winners were also recognized by representatives of Keep America Beautiful, RecycleMania, EPA, and CURC during an evening awards ceremony. Congratulations to all of 2013's winners! CURC coordinated two breakout sessions specific to Material Management. In the first Materials Management session, titled "Making Zero Waste Greater than a Zero Sum Game," attendees heard presentations from ESPN, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The second materials management session featured presentations from the University of Southern California and our host, UC Boulder. The presentations were followed by lively small group discussion of hot topics - Compost Education and Outreach, Making the Case for Zero Waste, Student Engagement, Sponsors and Contracts, and Measuring and Communicating Diversion Rates. On the final day, UC Boulder graciously hosted a tour of campus sustainability features - including the Environmental Center, Campus Recreation Center, basketball arena, and recycling sorting facility. All tour attendees were inspired to "Be Boulder" while exploring the scenic campus. A special thank you to our host institution, UC Boulder, and to Sustainable America and RecycleMania, sponsors of materials management sessions. The summit was held with additional support from Waterless.com, 360 Architecture, Coca-Cola Recycling, Atmos Air Solutions, Busch Systems, Sterling Planet, and Levy Restaurants. CURC is a member of the summit steering committee, which is organized by the Environmental Protection Agency with representatives from NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, Keep America Beautiful, Coca-Cola Recycling, Georgia World Congress Center, RecycleMania, and Green Sports Alliance.
