Good afternoon Main Street.  Below are requests from SHPO and Preservation Oklahoma, and some info on AARP office assistance.

SHPO
SHPO is trying to clean up the National Register for Historic Places list, and get current photos (cell phone pics are fine) of the buildings.  In no way am I trying to add to your mountain of work, but please alert Sara Werneke (swerneke at okhistory.org<mailto:swerneke at okhistory.org>) if you know of building on the list that has collapsed or been demolished.  The list is a great resource because it includes the name of the building and the NRHP number associated with the property.  This could be a project that a local historical society helps with, Junior Main Street, Design Committee, or a student that needs a project.  Any help is appreciated.

They do not need the archeological sites, and if you don't know what a DOE site is....


Determination of Eligibility
DOE properties are not listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). However, each of them has been determined eligible for the NRHP through one of two processes outlined in federal regulations.
The Keeper of the National Register (Keeper) issues a formal Determination of Eligibility (DOE) whenever a majority of private property owners object to the listing of their property in the NRHP (36 CFR Part 60) or when a federal agency and a State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) do not agree about NRHP eligibility during consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) [36 CFR Part 800].
A Consensus Determination of Eligibility results during a federal agency's consultation with a SHPO pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA. If the federal agency and the SHPO agree in writing that a property within a federal undertaking's area of potential effect is eligible for the NRHP, the property is treated as if it were listed in the NRHP or was formally determined eligible by the Keeper (36 CFR Part 800).

PRESERVATION OKLAHOMA
The deadline is coming up fast (December 1st) for nominations for the Most Endangered Places list.  This list is published annually and is made up of "properties and sites which have special historic or architectural significant to our state, but which are in danger of being lost, due to neglect, poor maintenance, obsolescence or other causes." (Preservation Oklahoma Board of Directors)  They hope the list will bring attention to the structures and do "something about it." I've received several requests about AARP office assistance, so here it is again....


Program Explanation:
AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) AARP Foundation launched its Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) more than 45 years ago to help low-income, unemployed people gain on-the-job training experience and find permanent work. The program assigns adults 55 and older to temporary, subsidized jobs that provide them with the skills to transition to permanent, unsubsidized employment. With grant funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, AARP Foundation operates SCSEP at 70 sites in 22 states and Puerto Rico. Since the program's inception, AARP Foundation SCSEP has helped more than half a million older adults obtain work training. In the past grant year alone, it has served over 12,000 participants and provided over 5 million hours of community service. Each SCSEP participant (also called enrollee) is placed in a temporary assignment with either a nonprofit community organization or a federal, state, county, or city organization. While working for these organizations, participants earn the prevailing minimum wage per hour of training they receive. Participants also benefit from SCSEP's "Trial Employment" opportunities, which allow them to fill vacant positions for two or four weeks at no cost to the employer. While enrolled in the program, participants also connect with their local AARP Foundation SCSEP project office. At each office, participants interact with the SCSEP Project Director and project office participants. Both are dedicated to cultivating a better quality of life for older workers by promoting opportunities for them to achieve economic independence. The SCSEP Project Director of the office is familiar with the local job market and job skills that are in high demand within the community. The Project Director works closely with employers to understand the qualifications required, work environments, and job opportunities available for mature workers. Project office participants are people enrolled in SCSEP who assist with project office operations as their work assignment. Although project office participants are not considered employees of AARP Foundation, they fully understand both the mission of the program and the responsibilities that lead to the project's success.
