We all have questions about the new vaccines being distributed. I had a very interesting talk with my brother-in-law, Jim Ham, who has a Masters degree in chemistry and has worked in a hospital lab for probably 40 years. (Sorry Jim if I make you seem old!). Anyway, here is his explanation- dumbed down for me, of course. Hope this helps. 

- In the past vaccines were made from a weak form of a real virus.  Both of these Covid vaccines are artificial copies of the outside only of the virus. Your body sees this facade of the virus and makes antibodies . Think of it as a movie set of a city street . Your eyes tell you it’s a real street of houses. But its just a facade . There is nothing behind it. It is not a living street of houses. These new vaccines are completely safe because there is nothing in them that can reproduce.-
