Hello all,

 

I just received the approval of our OK advocacy letter to Senator Lankford.  
As I mentioned in our zoom meeting this morning, this initial contact is 
specifically to Senator Lankford, as he is a member of the appropriations 
committee.    Please check the attached packet to ensure your name and program 
information is correct.  Also, please respond to this message your approval to 
be included as a “sign on”.   I included all programs in my draft and will 
remove any names who either do not respond or request to be removed. 

 

In my outreach to you for examples of how our MS programs are addressing and 
busting through COVID-19, I was greatly encouraged by your creativity and 
resilience.  Although this letter only allowed for a few, you all are doing 
great things.  I was inspired and feel that our legislators will be also. 

 

Other actions at this time:

·         I encourage you be knowledgeable of this proposal enough to be able 
to summarize the request and be prepared to discuss the need in your community 
to support programming and businesses in the recovery of COVID-19.

·         Inform your local representatives of the effort. [I will be talking 
to our local House Representative, Jay Steagall today just to let him know of 
the proposal.  [Why not let the information come from us?]

·         I hope to meet with a staffer from Senator Lankford’s office at a 
legislation breakfast next Tuesday morning to hand deliver this letter and 
proposal packet and invite/suggest a meeting with their appropriations issues 
staff to discuss further. 

 

We hope these are just the beginning steps for opening this conversation and 
look to a future call with our Senator and Patrice Frey as an ultimate goal in 
this effort.  I anticipate in the future that our efforts will include 
additional letters to other elected officials once this proposal moves to 
action. 

 

Again, please take a look at the attached and let me know of your approval 
ASAP . . . by the end of today, preferably.

FINDINGS FROM NATIONAL SURVEY:

*         Less than half of respondents who applied for federal relief dollars in the initial stimulus round received funding.

*         78% of the small businesses who responded had applied for federal relief associated with COVID-19, of those, 48% received funding

*         The smallest businesses had the least success with their application

*         39% of business owners who applied and have less than 6 employees received funding, compared to 64% of businesses with over 6 employees received funding

*         Businesses in small towns applied for relief less often had success receiving funding

*         89% of businesses in larger towns applied for relief, compared to 76% of businesses in less than 50,000 residents

*         Funding from PPP and EIDL offered little long-term financial relief

*         Half of the businesses that received funding through PPP and disclosed their funding amount received was less than $8,000, suggesting those businesses had relatively few employees and limited payroll expenses

*         More than a third of businesses earned no revenue in April and laid off or furloughed their entire staffs

*         31% of food service businesses and 28% of retail businesses generated no revenue in April

*         Personal care businesses were hit especially hard.  73% of businesses in survey did not earn revenue in the month of April, and 76% had laid off or furloughed their entire staffs

*         Main Street programs were a key provider of assistance to small businesses responding to the survey

*         Of the complete set of 728 business respondents, 40% of businesses said they received assistance from their local Main Street organization

*         More than 2.25 times the number of respondents have gotten support from Main Street than support from other sources, aside from Chamber of Commerce

*         Main Street was identified as a recent source of support by 42 percent more businesses than even Chamber of Commerce

Good afternoon Main Street.

The State of Oklahoma is launching the Oklahoma Business Relief Program (OBRP), which was developed to help local businesses overcome the economic challenges of COVID-19.  OBRP offers vital funding for businesses that have suffered revenue loss due to the pandemic.  It is similar to the PPP program, and the maximum grant is $25,000.  On Wednesday, Sean Kouplen, Secretary of Commerce and Workforce Development, is discussing the program during the weekly calls.  Jeremy Zeller is part of the OBRP team, and will be on the Friday MS Director's zoom call to discuss it more and answer questions. Good evening.  Here is the invite to the Director's zoom call for Friday morning.  We will hear from Jeremy regarding the OBRP grant program, so come with questions.  Tamara and Kelli are working with CareerTech on e-Commerce training sessions for merchants.  We also hope to utilize CareerTech for some one-on-one technical assistance.  Of course, I will put Vicki on the spot for any legislative updates.  We need to talk about the August training, banquet, and how you feel about the training sessions for the past four weeks.

Good Afternoon Main Street.  Below are the original training topics for August and November.  Please let me know if you want to continue with these, or other more pressing issues.  Virtual Tours was brought up on our ED zoom call on Friday.  Would you want a deeper dive into Norma's session on "The Value of Your Community's Main Street?"  Storytelling may still be relevant.  I want to hear from you.



August 25-27: Team and Partnership Development, Action Items, and Storytelling

Location: Kendall Whittier (Tulsa)

All Main Streets have a story, so how do you tell that story and use it to connect with others and promote your community?  Besides storytelling, we will explore turning action from a dream to action as reality, and finding the right people/groups to make it happen.  The Director's Roundtable will happen as well.  Please note this date has changed from early August  due to speaker availability. This is a required training. You will receive 25 quality assurance points for attending.



November 3-5: Branding, Diverse Fund Development, and Award Nominations

Location: Main Street Altus

The OMSC is working with the NMSC to get "Mr. Branding" himself, Ben Muldrow, for this session.  You will learn the value of an organizational brand, brand consistency, brand implementation, and more.  Norma Ramirez de Miess will educate us on the importance of diversified funding and how to achieve it.  We will also cover award nominations for 2021, and engage in our usual Director's Roundtable. This is a required training and you will receive 25 quality assurance points for attending.

The OBRP program is proving to be EXTREMELY popular.  Please meet with your banker and get your application in ASAP.
