Most nonprofit leadership groups recommend at least a 90 day cash reserve. This does not have to be in a separate account, but it might help the organization keep it in reserve. Ninety days of cash would allow a nonprofit to continue operations while receiving no sources of income. A method of arriving at this number is to research your last 12 months total expenses and divide by 12, to get you average monthly expenses. Multiply this number by 3 (3-months) to determine your estimated cash reserve need. If for some reason, your last three months expenses have been higher than normal, simply use the last three months total expenses as your estimated cash reserve need. Secondly, there can be questions about increasing this reserve for more than three months. It is entirely a board of directors decision. The tension will always be the balance between a cash reserve and the reaction of funders seeing a large amount of cash. Will funders help fund the organization that has too large a cash reserve? Larger reserves beyond 90 days usually requires deeper discussions with funders. Again, it is a board decision, but every organization is wise to have at least 90 days of cash reserves. Hope this helps! Kelli S. Yadon Oklahoma Main Street Center 900 N. On The Point there has been discussions on how to help small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion began with the Washington coordinator and the issues in Seattle. Below are a few ideas, as well as using this time to focus on strengthening parts of their businesses that they haven't had time to work on. * Retail businesses enhancing their online shopping experience. or finally getting moving on creating one * Small-Medium businesses intensifying their social media presence * offer facetime, skype, or chat channel services for selling virtually face-to-face, answering questions, providing the same customer service interaction you would get in a M&P atmosphere at location * When people work remotely, they are more susceptible to online shopping, checking in with social media more often, etc. Encourage businesses to take advantage of this. * Encourage businesses to publish their commitment to public health, outlining their actions for offering a clean facility and healthy staff * Keep customers updated on new experiences or products you'll offer when things subside * Coffee shops who roast can set up a customer membership for "subscribe & save" delivery or pick-up of beans, get people to order for the next couple weeks * Small grocers can offer to receive online grocery lists and shop for their customers to pick-up products or deliver them * promote the value and reliability of locally sourced and local supply chains * Stay in touch with customers by livestreaming. Show what you are doing to stay in business and get excited about the strategies you've come up with to meet customer needs during this time. Ex: Coffee shop that welcome people to connect with them every morning at 8am for the local news downtown, the local history story of the morning, the morning joke, or a meet your barista spotlight, etc. * look into business interruption insurance * local physicians to offer telemedicine services * Breweries can keep offering trivia nights by livestreaming and using an app that polls people's responses, customers being encouraged to drink their brews while participating or getting extra points for posting a picture of them and their brews at home. We can be reached as usual, our in-state travel still ongoing, but we do want to limit face-to-face meetings and practice social distancing. Dear Oklahoma Economic Development Leader, It is not a stretch to say the last week has been a crazy one in Oklahoma. We will do our part at the Dept. of Commerce to make sure all of you from all across the state are as informed as possible with the latest information to keep your local companies operating and thriving in our state. Everything is fluid right now, so I will be sending updates regularly so you know the latest. First of all, Governor Stitt is hosting a conference call today (March 16) at 3:30pm with local Chambers of Commerce about the State's response to the COVID-19 concerns. The dial in number is 253-215-8782 with a meeting ID of 313-897-077 and the password is 045537. I would encourage you to call in if you are available. Our focus at Commerce right now has changed from outreach and project development to more of a focus on making sure our existing businesses in the state are getting the assistance they need. The biggest tool available today to your companies will be the SBA Low Interest Disaster Assistance Loan program. This program allows 3.75% loans to small businesses and 2.75% loans to nonprofits that can be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills. The maximum loan available is $2 million. Even though the applications for this program will be found at www.ok.gov/OEM, Commerce has designated Ray Little as our single point of contact for assistance with SBA programs. His email is ray.little at okcommerce.gov and his phone number is 405-815-5227. Ray oversees our Regional Development Specialist program at Commerce and he will be assigning one of them to work as a caseworker on each of the businesses that need assistance. We are also monitoring other developments in DC with potential business assistance. This week Congress is voting on a bill called the Families First Coronavirus Response Act that would include mandatory sick leave for those affected by COVID-19, full coverage of testing by private health insurers and Medicaid, increased funding for nutrition programs, health care worker protection plans, and funding for expanded unemployment programs. We will give you more information as this legislation moves forward. On the state level, most of our business assistance programs relate to business "growth" and not always disaster related. We are analyzing our programs today to see if there are any tweaks we could look at in our programs to make them more useful for companies facing adversity right now. We are also working closely with the Oklahoma Employment Securities Commission and their new Director, Robin Roberson, to make sure those facing layoffs right now are directed to employment services so we can assist with signing folks up for unemployment assistance and connecting them to potential new jobs. The OKJobMatch on line app is very user friendly and is a great place to start. Our Main Street Division has been providing additional assistance to our state's 32 Main Street Communities and the small businesses that operate there. They are assisting them with their on line presence and connecting them to potential resources to help them survive a potential downturn in retail shopping. Even if your community is not designated as a Main Street Community, we would love to provide a similar service to you if it is needed. Just let me know and I'll connect you to our team. For the latest on COVID-19 in Oklahoma, you can go to www.coronavirus.health.ok.gov. You can sign up to get updates when they are available as well. We have a link to this site on our www.okcommerce.gov website as well. As of today, there have been 13 call trips and trade shows that have been cancelled or rescheduled that Commerce and many of you were planning to attend. We are also considering a number of cancellations within the state over the next few weeks. We will be rescheduling our RFI training that is coming up and our international site selector visit to our state. We are also looking at the State Main Street Banquet and the Lt Governor's Turkey Hunt. We will let you know directly if any of these get moved. And if there wasn't enough going on, this week cranks off our Oklahoma efforts to make sure everyone responds to their Census forms. You will see a lot of billboards and social media ads going up this week to remind people of this important civic responsibility. With the closure of many of our state libraries, we are looking for alternative sites for people to respond to the Census in their community. We will be sending more information out about alternative assistance locations later this week. We are reducing our staffing at the Commerce building and will be allowing many of our Associates to telework over the next few weeks. Please be patient with us as we get situated into this new method of service, but also, please let us know how we can be of service to you. You can reply to this email with any needs you might have and we will do our best to help. This is certainly an important health crisis for our state, but it is also quickly becoming an economic crisis. Together we can get through this, but the role of the Economic Developer in our state is as important as any time in recent history. Please let me know what we can do at Commerce to support your efforts in your community. Thanks, Brent -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's been a crazy few days, but I hope everyone is doing well. Here are a few updates.... * Oklahoma Department of Commerce ODOC is adding a COVID-19/Coronavirus section to the website. Associates have been researching best practices, tips, resources, etc., and hopefully it will be up by tomorrow or Friday. Please send me any links or information that everyone would benefit from and that can be added to the site. * GOVERNOR STITT SIGNS SB 661 IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19 Oklahoma City, Okla. (March 18, 2020)- Governor Kevin Stitt today signed Senate Bill 661, which aims to assist in the State's efforts to proactively mitigate the spread of COVID-19. "SB 661 allows all of our boards, commissions and other groups to continue to meet and conduct the people's business without gathering in groups larger than 10," said Governor Kevin Stitt. "I want to thank Rep. Chad Caldwell and Sen. Brent Howard for getting this across the finish line quickly." Senate Bill 661 temporarily amends the Oklahoma Open Meetings Act in order to allow boards, commissions and other groups the flexibility to conduct meetings by teleconference or videoconference in order to comply with the CDC recommendation that no more than 10 people gather together at this time. * You may be doing this already, but Downtown Elgin has a COVID-19 update page that includes links and information on business status (open/closed/doing takeout or curbside service or delivery, city/state/national links and our Facebook feed where we are sharing tons of posts from all our local businesses). https://www.downtownelgin.com/covid19updates/ Please contact me if you have any questions or comments. Out of abundance of caution and per COVID-19 recommendations from the CDC and the City of Tulsa, the ONE Awards have been rescheduled for Aug. 22 in Tulsa. They were originally scheduled for April 24. “Like so many other nonprofits, we have taken the steps necessary to postpone the ONE Awards,” Marnie Taylor, President and CEO of the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, said. “This is the highlight event for so many nonprofits who win awards each spring. While we are sad to have to postpone, we believe that preserving the health and wellness of our nonprofit employees, volunteers, board members and community philanthropists is paramount.” Each year, the ONE Awards honors a group of nonprofits from across Oklahoma that show excellence in programming, mission and management. The nearly sold-out event will be held at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. Taylor also mentioned that dozens of other nonprofits were cancelling or postponing events. Nonprofits who reschedule their galas should also visit the Center’s website okcnp.org and update event listings on its charitable events calendar. I hope everyone is well and practicing social distancing. First, I want to commend everyone on their efforts to support local business and continue community engagement. I've been trolling FB, peeking at your websites, and OMG!! YOU ARE CREATIVE! I can't tell you how proud I am of all of you. GREAT JOB!! Second, let's talk about the National Conference....Honestly, I thought they would have rescheduled it by now, but I guess not. The team and I were on our call yesterday morning, and it was decided to make this year an optional year. Below is the link that outlines the requirements for cancellation, and the drop dead date is 04/20/20 to get a refund. Personally, I am waiting until the last possible moment to make the decision, but we all need to consider our health and those close to us. Also, we cancelled the Oklahoma Main Street Reception at the Dallas Chop House. https://registration.sitesolutionsworldwide.com/synergy/v_1_/home/policies.php?popup=1&ccc=9_119_1275&syntrack=&scid=1275#policy495 Please remember that the State staff is here to help, and reach out to us if you need anything.
