From Anna.Schilling at okcommerce.gov Tue Jul 1 12:29:09 2025 From: Anna.Schilling at okcommerce.gov (Anna Schilling) Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2025 17:29:09 +0000 Subject: [MainstreetManagers] Backing Small Businesses Grant - Taking applications soon! Message-ID: [cid:e2b18587-83d7-45dc-a646-f91ecd4af578] What types of businesses are eligible? Businesses must meet the following criteria to apply: * The applicant must be an owner of the business. * The applicant must be at least 18 years of age or older. * The business must be in a “bricks-and-mortar” location and operate in an older or historic main street, downtown, or commercial district in the United States. The business must have occupied their current bricks-and-mortar location since January 1, 2025. (Home-based businesses, even those located in historic neighborhoods, are not eligible. Brick and mortar businesses located outside of historic downtowns and commercial corridors, including, but not limited to, office parks and shopping malls are also not eligible.) * The business must be an independent business and not part of a franchise or a nonprofit. * The business must employ 20 or fewer full-time employees. * The business must have been in operation on or before January 1, 2024. * The business must be a business entity in good standing in the state in which it was formed and the state in which it does business. * The business must have an active business license, if required by state or local government. (Applicants may be asked to provide documentation if selected.) · The business must not have received a Backing Small Businesses grant in any previous cycle, nor received a grant supported by American Express in 2025 (including the Backing Small Business Disaster Recovery Grant Program) What do we mean by “older or historic main street”? We are seeking businesses that are in the “heart” of their communities, whatever size or form that may be. We recognize that all communities are different, and this phrase is intentionally flexible and adaptable to many different contexts. We define this as a contiguous commercial district with businesses and mixed-use buildings along a commercial corridor. In some communities, this may look like wall-to-wall retail and commercial accessible to pedestrians via a sidewalk or path. In other places, this may look like a plaza with small businesses around a central parking lot. In small rural communities, there may only be one or two stores on either side of an intersection. Businesses should primarily neighbor other commercial businesses (not residential homes) and community members might visit multiple businesses nearby when running errands, going to appointments, or visiting with family and friends. What types of grant expenses are eligible? Eligible grant expenses include but are not limited to: * Accessibility Upgrades (Examples: ramp, menu translation, accessible website redesign for visually impaired people, etc.) * Community Events and Programs (Examples: open mic night, public educational/training workshops, hosting community fund raisers, partnerships with other small businesses) * Equipment and Inventory (Examples: point of sale device/software, purchasing of items for sale, display cases, kitchen equipment) * Marketing (Examples: investing in social media campaign, building a website, etc.) * Operational Strategy (Examples: branding package, accounting software, business coaching, and other types of support that would increase the viability of your business) * Physical Improvements (Examples: signage, awnings, painting facade, new shelving, new lighting, etc.) * Sustainability Upgrades (Examples: solar panels, rain garden adjacent to business, investing in reusable/compostable/recyclable packaging alternatives, etc.) * Technology Upgrades (Examples: building an online storefront, online ordering system, or other e‑commerce platform) *Note that utilities must not be more than $2000 or 20% of the requested funds. *Note that payroll, debt/loan repayment, and payment of invoices are NOT eligible uses of grant funds. Applications will open on Wednesday, July 16 at 9:00 a.m. CT and close on Thursday, July 31 at 11:59 p.m. CT. link: Backing Small Businesses supported by American Express | Main Street America Anna Schilling | Oklahoma Main Street Oklahoma Department of Commerce Anna.Schilling at okcommerce.gov c. 405-212-8633 (text capable) OKcommerce.gov [Title: State of Oklahoma logo - Description: Multi-color chevron pinwheel with the word Oklahoma to the right.] [cid:6f94112e-d0ab-4b9e-8786-83adf0ce765a] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... TOOLS FOR YOUR BUSINESS is a FREE and interactive event for all business owners and budding entrepreneurs. Covering topics in a speed-dating style format, attendees will meet local professionals to help their businesses and network with other business owners to strengthen the economic vitality of your community’s historic core. As the result of our success in other Main Street communities, our leadership has seen the value of creating more entrepreneurship opportunities in our Main Streets programs as well as providing business retention expansion. As a result, we have set-up a stipend of up to $2,500 per awarded to help with planning, resources and event execution. TARGET AUDIENCE: * People who want to start a business but don’t know where to start. * People who are in business but want to go to the expand. * Partners to include: City representatives (permits),local banks, CDFI’s, local insurance agents, marketing and branding firms, SBDC, Able Commission, Bi-lingual staff or translators, local career tech, college or university reps, radio, newspaper, etc. The stipend is to be used solely towards your local vendors that would provide services for proper event planning such as space rental, printing of marketing/promotion materials, food, etc. If your program is selected, we would provide instructions/information to ensure a proper processing system is followed for payment of services to your vendors directly. Consequently, on the last page of application (List of Vendors for Consideration), please leave blank as we will cover this separately should your program be selected. If you are interested in this opportunity, please fill out the attached application by 5pm, August 8, 2025. If needed, we will be happy to schedule and meet with you, your Board President & EV Chair/Committee to answer any questions prior to the completing of the application as both your President and Chair would need to provide signatures on the application along with yours before submitting to us. Funding for stipend has been set aside for our FY’26 which starts on July 1st, so, if chosen, your program can plan your event anytime between July 1, 2025– June 30, 2026. Note: We will award no more than 4 Main Street programs for FY’25, so consider this a competitive application given that we currently have a number of programs that have expressed interest. I look forward to hearing from and working with you to bring entrepreneurial opportunities to your community!
