Dear Main Street Colleagues,

Two weeks ago, I wrote to you<https://mainstreet.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1&id=ec1bca31a2&e=b238bab018> with a call to action: urge your members of Congress to keep the Historic Tax Credit (HTC) in the tax code. Despite the ardent advocacy work of Main Streeters and preservationists across the county, the House Tax Reform bill released yesterday by the House Ways and Means Committee has eliminated the HTC.

We know that the Historic Tax Credit has a proven track record<https://mainstreet.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1&id=d9b8cf06fc&e=b238bab018> of creating jobs, spurring private investment, and generating fiscal revenue. While the Tax Reform bill is intended to stimulate economic growth, elimination of the federal historic tax credits undermines the revitalization of our older and historic towns and cities.

Congress will begin debate on this bill next week with a vote expected by mid-November. We also understand the Senate tax reform bill is expected to be released before Thanksgiving. I urge you, once again, to ACT NOW to communicate the value of the Historic Tax Credit to your Representatives and Senators in Congress.

How can you take action right now? Contact House and Senate Members!<https://mainstreet.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1&id=7506ff5c53&e=b238bab018>

  *   Call during office hours.
  * Ask to speak to tax staff or ask for a tax staffers email address.
A suggested outline of your email message or phone call:

  1. Introduce yourself as a constituent.
  2. Say “I heard the historic tax credit is eliminated in the House version of the tax reform bill. I am extremely concerned that this important community redevelopment incentive will no longer be available to revitalize our Main Streets, towns and cities and preserve our heritage.”
  3. Explain why you value Historic Tax Credits. Include examples from your area.<https://mainstreet.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1&id=89a2d04b65&e=b238bab018>
  4. Ask…. “As tax reform moves forward, will (the Representative) stand up for the Historic Tax Credit and use his/her voice to insist that the credit be retained in tax reform?”
  5. Share with the office the video of President Reagan supporting the HTC<https://mainstreet.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1&id=bcd1e1547a&e=b238bab018>.
 Whether your community has utilized the HTC already, or you have your sights set on a potential project, it is urgent that we, as Main Street America, band together to protect this important revitalization tool. Thank you for acting quickly and speaking up for Main Street!

Sincerely,
[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/881199cb2d0b2894c01ba06c1/images/914dbe19-1e5f-46ea-967a-a5694935fded.jpg]
