Dear Buffy, Jeremy, Kelli, and Tamara, Way back in 1986, I met a sales representative at a conference. He stated that he had a listing of all the Oklahoma streetlight installations from 1906-1930. This included 5,115 poles in 68 Oklahoma towns. Over the years, I lost Page Two of this letter. There could be a copy of this in the files (under streetlights or Union Metal). Todd Scott and Jennifer Gates took this information and created a new list for this and then created a file for each town that has the pole counts and illustrations for the original poles. This large, thick file should be in the design files. This is great information. (Part of the original letter and the new list are attached.) Recently, while working on a project in Waurika, I contacted the Union Metal folks about this list. I remembered that Waurika was one of the towns with 48 Union Metal light poles as I had been contacted a couple of years ago about these. They now have a digital list that is very good. The digital list is attached as well. Also, Larry scanned the drawings for the most popular light poles in each town and created a digital file. He shared this with me. I can share that with you if you need. Should any of the towns want to determine exactly what their original streetlights were like, this information will help them. I thought I would share this information with you just in case someone is working on a sidewalk/streetscape project. Ron -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Tulsa's Kendall Whittier District, once home to the city's first suburban shopping center, is now a model destination district for arts, culture, shopping and, of course, food trucks. By adapting the framework of the Main Street Approach to the needs of a diverse, creative, urban district, Kendall Whittier Main Street has created economic vitality, inclusive opportunity, and community transformation. Founded in 2010, Kendall Whittier Main Street has an impressive reinvestment ratio of $39.11-every $1 of public investment ($900,000) has generated $39.11 in private investment ($35.2 million)! They have also significantly reduced their vacancy rate from 65% to 3% exclusively through locally-owned businesses. The 2019 Great American Main Street Awards Winners will be announced at the 2019 Main Street Now Conference in Seattle March 25. Water Sector Innovation Keep the Momentum Going RD is calling on all partners to continue working together to provide affordable, clean drinking water in rural America. Through our Water and Environmental Programs we offer technical assistance grants; loan guarantees for banks and lenders that partner with us to provide water infrastructure financing, and direct loans from USDA to assist rural utilities with their infrastructure needs. Technical assistance providers like the National Rural Water Association and Rural Community Assistance Partnership have been strong partners with us, providing hands-on, on-site guidance to rural utilities to help them comply with regulations, manage their finances and sustain effective operations. Over the past few months, WEP has worked with participating lenders to: * Use more interim financing to expedite construction * Use more guaranteed loans as an additional financing tool * Refinance more existing loans to provide better rates or increase cash flow for rural utilities. Historic Funding Opportunity Congress provided USDA with more than $4 billion in direct loans for rural water infrastructure projects. This is a historic opportunity to take advantage of WEP assistance for rural communities. Affordable financing is available for State and local governments, nonprofits and Federally recognized tribes to buy, build or improve: * Drinking water systems * Sewer systems * Solid waste systems and * Storm water systems. Our funding may also be used for related activities like: * Legal and engineering fees * Land acquisition, water and land rights, permits and equipment * Start-up operations and maintenance * Interest incurred during construction * Purchase of facilities to improve service or prevent loss of service * Other costs determined to be necessary for completion of the project To learn more, contact your RD State Office. USDA Invites Partners to Join the Rural Workforce Innovation Network (RWIN) WASHINGTON, Aug. 24, 2018 - Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett today announced that USDA is inviting organizations to join a national network of public-private partners to support rural workforce development and skills management. USDA's Rural Development Innovation Center created the Rural Workforce Innovation Network (RWIN) initiative to enable rural partners to share solutions to complex issues, identify available resources, and increase access to workforce opportunities. The network also will collaborate to ensure that rural workers have access to training that aligns with the skills employers need. Please indicate your interest in joining the network by emailing RD.Innovation at osec.usda.gov by Aug. 31, 2018. Interested partners should submit a document no longer than two pages that includes the organization's name, contact information, and its past and present contributions, which should include one or more of the following workforce development interests: * Use of labor market and data to drive strategies; * Public-private collaboration to attract employers and define workforce requirements; * Workforce readiness and training; * Apprenticeship and job placements; * Recruitment and retention; * Sector-based best practices related to workforce (i.e. veterans, telecommunications, water, manufacturing, health care, etc.); and * Succession planning, including strategies such as worker cooperatives. RWIN members will be announced in September. 2. To celebrate Innovation Month this past June, the Rural Development Innovation Center hosted the first-ever OneRD National Lender Forum to give lenders that partner with RD a forum to discuss the unique issues that impact rural lending. Participants shared innovative ideas, such as: * Establishing creative financing; * Streamlining regulations; * Modernizing processes and; * Launching a public-private partnership to increase awareness of how to access capital. We're taking these great ideas from lenders and looking at ways to apply these to improve customers' experience when they contact USDA for assistance. The feedback we received from lenders at the forum will also help drive additional public-private investments and increase opportunities to leverage resources from the private sector to maximize the federal dollars that RD provides. Optional activities typically include a reception, tours, the annual conference luncheon, and the annual awards luncheon. The awards luncheon features the induction of the individuals into the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame and the presentation of additional awards. Call for Papers and Presentations The OHS is seeking papers and presentations for the 2019 Oklahoma History and Preservation Conference, which will be held April 24, 25 and 26, 2019, on the campus of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in Chickasha, Oklahoma. A total of eighteen presentation sessions will take place Thursday morning, April 25, and Friday morning, April 26. This year's theme is "Women Who Built History," and will celebrate the centennial of women in Oklahoma receiving the right to vote in late 1918. The USAO campus is a National Register of Historic Places historic district that was originally the Oklahoma College for Women. The OHS encourages history or preservation presentations related to women's history, but will accept proposals on all aspects of Oklahoma history and historic preservation. Presentation sessions will be forty-five minutes in length and will feature one presentation not to exceed thirty minutes. This will allow fifteen minutes for an introduction and questions. Individuals interested in making a presentation should prepare a one-page proposal including the title of the proposed presentation; a 100-word description of the presentation; the name, address, phone number, and email address of the presenter; and a short vita or biographical sketch. Those who submit proposals will be notified of their status by early February 2019 if not sooner. Registration fees for presenters will be waived. Presentation proposals are being accepted now. The deadline for submitting proposals is Friday, December 28, 2018. Please send presentation proposals to Annual Conference Committee Attn: Larry O'Dell Oklahoma Historical Society 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive Oklahoma City, OK 73105 Proposals also may be emailed to Larry O'Dell at lodell at okhistory.org.
