Think about how different the outcome might have been for First Christian Church (Egg Church) in Oklahoma City if people knew the education wing had extensive plumbing for bathrooms; that the theater systems had been updated in the theater-in-the-round wing; that the pulpit came up from the basement like an elevator; that it had so much extra land to support 1200 parking spaces, an outdoor theater and a separate school building. All of which has been demo's and will soon be a new mixed-use development. With that said, the SHPO would like to start a social media piece every two weeks that will focus on a NRHP listed property in a Main Street community that is currently vacant. The idea is to engage the local community on creative ideas for use. I'm not necessary talking about turning a building into a skate park or a training facility for the circus (watch the video of her presentation) but just to get people talking about the vacant buildings and potential uses. The property that immediately came to mind is the former Post Office,/current Police Station in Sapulpa. Such a beautiful piece of historic architecture (listed in the NRHP) that people are talking about demolishing for a new building. If you are interested in participating, send me an email with a photograph and address of the property(ies) you would like to focus on in your community and we will get started. There is a vacant building we would be interested in moving forward - the Evans Fintube building, 116 N Lansing, in the Historic Greenwood District.
