Subject: NSF Funding 'Science of Learning' Projects E/P NBS#1996
NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF STATE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS COALITIONS
News Brief #1996 Category: Education Policy
TITLE: "NSF Commits $20 Million to 'Science of Learning' Projects"
The National Science Foundation is seeking applications for as many as 30 projects that will build on existing research into how people learn, and put the new findings into use in schools.
"This is going to push the sciences of learning in a big way to bring to bear what they can tell us [about] how people learn," said Steven Breckler, NSF's program director for behavioral and cognitive sciences.
The agency will make three to five major grants of $3 million to $5 million annually to "Science of Learning Centers" conducting research on learning and working with schools or other practitioners to test various methods.
Another 20 smaller grants will be awarded to "catalysts" examining narrow topics in learning.
