[Oacrao-l] Tribal Cards

SHEEO does a terrific job of defining groups and reporting methodologies. "Community attachment" does not require a tribal card and is a self-reported trait, while tribal affiliation may require a card. Either way is acceptable data collection, as long as it is self-reported.

For postsecondary institutions, self-reporting of ethnicity/race by students and employees is the desired method. If the individual does not self-identify, the postsecondary institution should report "Unknown" to IPEDS

American Indian or Alaska Native - A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America), and who maintains a tribal affiliation or community attachment.

We do not. We ask tribe and lineage on the application but it is self reported and we don't ask for proof.

Does your institution collect tribal card information on students who report Native American heritage? If so, is this done through the admissions office or another office on campus.

Thank you,

Amy Ishmael
