The OACRAO executive committee discussed, during our last committee meeting, the idea of moving our front-line workshop from September to June in hopes of increasing participation. I realize that many institutions have been forced to reduce their travel budgets significantly, and therefore this reduction has had a direct impact on attendance. The committee was wondering if this change might allow some to attend that are unable to do so in September. We are very curious how the membership feels about moving this event to June. We have a process similar to what you describe. The student enrolls in a three hour course detailing the processing of preparing their portfolio. The student indicates the courses for which they desire to receive credit. The portfolio is then evaluated by faculty in those respective areas. Credit is granted based on the recommendations of the faculty. Hope this helps! In His Service, David H. Fulmer, III Registrar Instructor, ORU Distance Learning Department Oral Roberts University 918.495.7480 (office) 918.495.6607 (fax) registrar.oru.edu ( http://www.oru.edu/ ) >>> Jerry J Legere 1/6/2011 8:39 AM >>> Adam and all: When I was at Northern Kentucky University many years ago, we had a one person office who was responsible for "prior learning." Her job was to work with the academic community and guide students through the portfolio development process to seek academic credit. For a student to seek academic credit, they were required to take a two credit hour course that taught them how to earn credit, how to document their learning experiences and what can be included and what would not qualify for consideration. Without this course, they could not seek prior learning credit. The students would spend the semester exploring what they might qualify for in seeking credit and how to prepare such a portfolio to document their learning. At the end of the semester, they would earn their two hours credit, assuming they finished the course and they would have direction about seeking credit for prior learning. During the two hour course, many times they could be working on their portfolios. Not all academic departments would entertain prior learning for credit but many did. Every department would do departmental exams as an alternative. However, I remember one person who was a high ranking banker who had never earned her degree but used the prior learning portfolio development process to eventually earn her business degree. Many students still have to take regular courses but the prior learning process allowed them to bypass a number of courses in the classroom for which they already had the knowledge but lacked the official transcripted credential. There has to be a commitment at the institution and within the academic community. There needs to be a market of adults which the OKC area certainly has. It would fit nicely into the Adult Degree Completion program which Tim McElroy is coordinating around the state from the NSU campus for the Regents. It is, however, a very time consuming process for faculty and we had to face the thorny issue of faculty compensation. It is not easy to solve. This email serves as first notification to register (if you have yet to do so) to attend the 15th Annual ACT Southwest Region Conference on College Readiness and Success. This year's conference will be held at the historic La Mansion Del Rio located directly on the famous San Antonio Riverwalk. The conference is uniquely scheduled to begin the afternoon of Wednesday April 6th and conclude after Friday morning brunch on April 8th. The 15th annual conference requires only a two night stay and coincides with the internationally recognized Fiesta San Antonio cultural celebration. More information about this popular event can be found here: Fiesta This informative ACT conference will provide you and your staff with a great low-cost opportunity for professional development as well as an opportunity to experience what many consider one of the best "cultural festivals" in the world. As a non for profit partner of higher education, ACT is sensitive to budget constraints that many are experiencing. Thus, we are able to offer this conference at a very low cost of $150.00 per person for early registrants. This cost includes four excellent meals. Conference and on-line registration information is available : Conference Registration The 15th Annual ACT Southwest Conference will provide post secondary administrators, from both student and academic affairs, with the opportunity to learn more about best practices associated with testing/assessment , student recruitment, course placement, remediation and retention related strategies. All session presenters are post secondary administrators who will share expert insight relative to how they have been successful in achieving critical institutional goals on their respective campuses. An informative enrollment management/admissions related track is included that will focus on strategic enrollment management strategies associated with recruitment and retention. Much of the conference will focus on how ACT's programs and services, specifically the COMPASS internet version, can strategically be used to enhance student success initiatives associated with recruitment, placement, advancement and retention. This conference has grown in attendance each year as it provides a wide array of campus administrators with an opportunity to gather valuable information relative to what others across the nation are doing to ensure college readiness, increase student persistence and enhance overall institutional effectiveness. If you are unable to attend, please forward this email to any other administrator or staff member that you believe would benefit from attending. Please note that there is a limited number of hotel rooms available to conference attendees at $149.00 per night. These will quickly fill so be sure to secure a room asap as we again expect to fill our allotment before the hotel registration deadline of March 14th. San Antonio experiences some phenomenal tourism trends during Fiesta week so alternate lodging options will be limited. You can contact the hotel at 210-518-1000 to rsvp and mention the ACT GROUP rate. Or simply click on this link to register on-line La Mansion Del Rio .
