From Don.Pitchford at act.org Thu Jan 5 09:40:53 2012 From: Don.Pitchford at act.org (Don.Pitchford at act.org) Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2012 09:40:53 -0600 Subject: [Oacrao-l] 16th Annual ACT Southwest Region Conference on College Readiness and Success Message-ID: Greetings from ACT, We hope you enjoyed the break and are off to a successful start of the Spring semester. This email serves as a reminder to consider attending , or finalize approval for attending, the 16th Annual ACT Southwest Region Conference on College Readiness and Success. This popular conference will be held at the magnificent Marriott River Center Hotel located directly on the famous San Antonio Riverwalk. The conference is uniquely scheduled to begin the afternoon of Wednesday April 18th and conclude after Friday morning brunch on April 20th. The 16th annual conference has been designed to require the maximum of only a two night stay and coincides with the internationally recognized Fiesta San Antonio cultural celebration. Therefore, this provides you and your colleagues with a great opportunity to mix professional development with an exciting leisure event. More information about Fiesta can be found here: Fiesta This informative ACT conference provides you and your staff with a great low-cost opportunity to benefit from a variety of professional development sessions as well as experience insightful messages from key note speakers: Stuart Hunter, Executive Director of the National First -Year Experience Center and Bruce Vandal, Director of the Postsecondary and Workforce Development Institute of the Education Commission of the States. As a non for profit partner of higher education, ACT is sensitive to budget constraints that many are experiencing. Thus, we are able to offer this conference at a very low cost of $165.00 per person. This cost includes four complete meals. The conference program and on-line registration information is available here : Conference Registration The 16th Annual ACT Southwest Conference provides post secondary administrators, from both student and academic affairs, with the opportunity to learn more about best practices associated with testing/assessment , student recruitment, course placement, remediation and retention related strategies. Most all session presenters are post secondary administrators who will share expert insight relative to how they have been successful in achieving critical institutional goals on their respective campuses. An informative enrollment management/admissions related track is included that focuses on strategic enrollment management. We have also added several research based sessions that will provide insightful information relative to student persistence and success. Much of the conference will focus on how ACT's programs and services, specifically the COMPASS internet delivered placement and diagnostic system, can strategically be used to enhance student success. This conference continues to grow in attendance each year as it provides a wide array of campus administrators with an opportunity to gather valuable information relative to what others across the nation are doing to ensure optimal enrollments, increase student persistence and enhance overall institutional effectiveness. If you are unable to attend, please forward this email to any other administrator or staff member that you believe would benefit from attending. Please note that there is a limited number of hotel rooms available to conference attendees at $149.00 per night. These quickly fill so be sure to secure a room asap as we again expect to fill our allotment before the hotel registration deadline of March 27th. San Antonio experiences phenomenal tourism during Fiesta week so alternate lodging options will be limited. You can contact the hotel at 210-223-1000 to rsvp and mention the ACT GROUP rate. Or simply click on this link to register on-line Marriott River Center . We are looking forward to seeing all past attendees, and a significant number of new attendees, this spring in festive San Antonio. Should you have any questions about the conference, please contact Ruby Howard, Conference Coordinator at 512 320-1850 or email ruby.howard at act.org . There's a rumor here that if the student takes the 0-level arithmetic course and qualifies prerequisite-wise for our MATH 1113 - Math for General Education course, then the deficiencies should be cleared, and the 24 hour limit erased. Students are not allowed to take any college level class until the remediation is taken care of. Skills deficiencies are a bit different. We have a grid which looks at both ACT and Compass. If a student scores high enough to take MATH 1413 Survey of Math but not high enough to take MATH 1513 College Algebra, we will allow enrollment in the 1413 course. This is usually done by those with majors not requiring 1513. However, if the student must take 1513 for their major, they are required to successfully complete 0214 before they are allowed to enroll in 1513. Student is pursuing a major that does not require College Algebra. There's a rumor here that if the student takes the 0-level arithmetic course and qualifies prerequisite-wise for our MATH 1113 - Math for General Education course, then the deficiencies should be cleared, and the 24 hour limit erased. And the further extension: that if the student completes the MATH 1113 - Math for General Education course, without having the 0-level Elementary or Intermediate Algebra courses, then the Math deficiencies are cleared. This is all based on the student being in a major that does not require College Algebra. How would you all look at this at your institution? I maintain the deficiency hasn't been met, since the algebra requirement hasn't been met. Thanks for your help. If the student's major requires MATH 1513 then their ACT or CPT score has to be high enough to take it. If same student scores only high enough to take MATH 1813 then they may take this course but they would still need to take MATH 0213 before taking College Algebra (MATH 1513) - their deficiency would not be cleared. Hope that makes sense!
