Has anyone received any literature recently about a program called the
DreamDegree? They are offering general education courses taught online that
are free to eligible students (must have high school diploma or GED and not
be enrolled in a college or university) and come with ACE credit
recommendations.  If so, has anyone decided if they will be accepting credit
for these courses?

Rose State recognizes Honors Coursework and Honors Degrees as well as Phi Theta Kappa on the Official Transcript.   Generally, these items are added when we post degrees.   However, there are a few other times of the year that we do enter Phi Theta Kappa and Honors designations.

We have a separate Rose State Student Activity transcript where we enter all Service Learning, Student Senate, Student Club memberships and leadership positions held within the clubs.

The State Regents staff are currently in the preliminary stages of planning a spring workshop themed around student veterans issues.  This workshop has traditionally been geared toward staff members who work as VA certifying officials, etc., but we would like to open it up to a broader audience, such as academic advisors, registrars, admissions officers, etc.  In order to help us plan the most effective workshop, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to respond to this email and let me know:


1.      Would you be interested in attending such a conference?  (The registration fee would be small.)

2.      What kinds of student veterans-related issues would you like to hear about?

3.      Do you have any recommendations for speakers, breakout sessions, etc.?

Kyle, I think such an opportunity would be great for others to attend as even if we don't serve as the SCO we interface with veterans every day. If there could be a session on PTSD or even just the transition that students returning from tours of active duty face it might help staff to better understand some of the challenges that these students might have. Perhaps even have a veteran who recently returned from duty who is now enrolled present their experience.

Just a thought.

Subject: [Oacrao-l] POLICY REVISION - Student Assessment and Remediation

OACRAO members:

At their October 22, 2015 meeting, the State Regents approved revisions to the Assessment and Remediation policies.  These revisions are effective beginning with the Fall 2016 academic term.

The revisions to the State Regents' Assessment and Remediation policies combine the two policies into one and incorporate changes to align with current terms used nationally regarding student assessment and remediation.  The Remediation policy will be deleted due to its incorporation into the Assessment policy to create a single policy document addressing both assessment and remediation of student learning.

Below is a summary of the substantive changes to the Assessment and Remediation policies:

?         3.19 - Title - The title of the policy was changed to reflect the combined Assessment and Remediation policies.
?         3.19.1 - Purpose - The policy revision adds a clear statement regarding the purpose of student assessment and remediation and includes a statement how to address students who have curricular and basic academic skills deficiencies.
?         3.19.2 - Definitions - The revisions update existing definitions to provide better guidance to institutions regarding policy language and add definitions to the policy for the following terms: Accountability and Institutional Effectiveness; and Concurrent Enrollment.
?         3.19.3 - Principles - The revisions update the policy for improvement of teaching and learning, accountability for institutional effectiveness, and developmental education.
?         3.19.4.B - Basic Academic Skills Requirements - The revision in this section includes updating policy language and adds "high school assessments predictive of college course success" as an option for students to demonstrate competency in addition to use of ACT scores in the four subject areas of science, English, mathematics, and reading.
?         3.19.4.D - Adult Students - New section added to provide a policy statement regarding assessment and remediation of adult students.
?         3.19.8 - Assessment Plan and Reporting - The section was restructured to provide guidance regarding institutional assessment plans and annual student assessment reports.

An important component of the policy implementation includes the development of procedures for the Academic Affairs Procedures Handbook.  Over the course of the next few months, the Council on Instruction handbook committee will develop procedures that align with the aforementioned policy revisions to provide increased guidance to institutions with regard to assessment and remediation of student learning.

For your reference, the updated policy is attached.

I have a concurrent admissions/placement question:
For concurrent high school enrollment, I accept only the most recent ACT exam.  If a student took the ACT in Sept of 2014 and had a 19 Math subscore, but on subsequent exams taken in Spring & Fall 2015 has an 18 or below, would you allow her to enroll in College Algebra as a concurrent student in Spring 2016?  If you do not want to answer for God and everyone to see, respond back privately.  If you don't care who sees your response or believe you are God (aka Jon Horinek), then let all know your position!

I guess I don't mind everyone seeing my answer.      At Southeastern, we will use the highest sub-scores from any of the concurrent student's ACT tests for placement purposes.

For concurrent high school enrollment, I accept only the most recent ACT exam.  If a student took the ACT in Sept of 2014 and had a 19 Math subscore, but on subsequent exams taken in Spring & Fall 2015 has an 18 or below, would you allow her to enroll in College Algebra as a concurrent student in Spring 2016?  If you do not want to answer for God and everyone to see, respond back privately.  If you don't care who sees your response or believe you are God (aka Jon Horinek), then let all know your position!

At ECU, we do what SOSU and TCC does...highest sub-score, no matter when they took the exam.

How many have an active program where Senior Citizens (65+) who are Oklahoma residents may audit classes and receive tuition and fee waivers?     If so, would you be willing to share your policy/procedures on this?    We rarely have inquiries on it so we don't have a set plan in place here.   Any information will be appreciated!

Rogers State University has the following published in the Bulletin:

"Tuition will be waived, but fees are required, for residents of Oklahoma who are 65 years of age or older who wish to audit courses at Rogers State University.  Auditing a course is contingent upon space available in the classroom or laboratory.  Written permission from the instructor of the class must be presented at the time of registration.  Applicants should contact financial aid for the tuition waiver application."

HI, Kristie!

Cameron University does have a policy for senior citizens to audit courses.  Please see the sequence of events below:


1.       The student admits normally through the office of Admissions as a non-degree seeking student and pays the $15 application fee.

2.       Student determines the class or classes in which they would like to enroll.

3.       Student contacts respective instructor to request permission to enroll as an "auditor".

4.       Instructor calls/emails the Registrar's office requesting student be enrolled as an auditor.

5.       Registrar's Office will enroll the student and denote the class as an "AU" enrollment status in the Banner student information system.  This enrollment status automatically inserts a grade of "AU" into the course roster and eventually rolls to academic history (and the transcript) at the end of the semester.  At the time of enrollment, we send an email to our Business Office indicating that the student is a senior citizen and they adjust the tuition and fees on the student's account.

6.       If the senior citizen wishes to obtain academic credit and a grade for the course, they are required to enroll as a normal student and pay tuition and fees.
