Hello OACRAO members,

I want to take a quick moment to address awarding college credit based on the completion of Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) coursework.  Some of you may remember that I addressed this issue at the Fall 2017 OACRAO conference.  As background, the State Regents’ Credit for Prior Learning policy does not provide a pathway for an institution to award credit for direct instruction from a high school.  Therefore, based on the framework of the policy, an institution is not permitted to award credit for prior learning based on a student simply completing an OSSM course. 

Although the Credit for Prior Learning policy does not provide an opportunity to award credit based on direct high school instruction, the policy allows institutions to utilize institutionally prepared assessments as a means to award credit for prior learning.  Thus, a State System institution can award credit for prior learning to an OSSM graduate in cases in which the departmentally developed assessments are applied as the basis for awarding such credit. 

It should also be noted that applying high school credit as college transfer credit is prohibited under the State Regents Undergraduate Transfer and Articulation policy. 

Lastly, while the aforementioned policies do not provide a pathway for awarding credit based on direct instruction from a high school, the State Regents’ Contractual Arrangements Between Higher Education Instructions and Other Entities policy provides a framework for awarding credit in such a way.  Under this policy, a State System institution is eligible to award credit based on direct instruction from a non-degree granting entity, such as a high school, through a State Regents’ approved contractual arrangement.  Among other things, this requires an institution to designate a full-time faculty member with content expertise to oversee the contractual arrangement. More information regarding this policy is detailed in policy section 3.6.

UCO does the same as SEOSU.  Since OSSM is considered a high school, we only allow credit via AP, CLEP, etc.

At Southeastern, we do not automatically award credit for OSSM coursework.   Students may receive credit via AP, CLEP, or Advanced Standing.
