OACRAO members,
A couple of course repeat scenarios, specifically as the policy relates to lab and non-lab science courses, were inquired about at OACRAO. As such, here is the follow-up.
Scenario 1: A student earns a "D" in BIO 1114 General Biology (lecture only, no lab component) and subsequently earns a "B" in BIO 1214 and 1214L General Biology with a lab component (one grade is assigned).
The central issue is when the lab was completed. If the lab was completed in the second attempt and the lecture content is deemed equivalent, the repeat is appropriate.
Therefore, provided that the course content is equivalent, it would be acceptable to apply the repeat provision to the "D" grade in BIO 1114.
Scenario 2: A student earns a "D" in BIO 1214 and 1214L General Biology with a lab component (one grade is assigned) and subsequently earns a "B" in BIO 1114 General Biology (lecture only, no lab component).
In contrast the first attempt, the second attempt did not include the lab component. Thus, the repeat is not allowable because the first attempt contained a central component that was not included in the second attempt, which thereby makes the second attempt not equivalent.
