[Oasfaa] President's Budget Proposal to Eliminate FFELP

Dear Colleagues:
 
Over the past few weeks, some of you have shared your concerns with me
regarding the elimination of the FFEL program in President Obama’s
Fiscal Year 2010 budget framework.  Many of you feel that FFELP versus
Direct Loans is an issue that should be debated by Congress and not
pushed through the legislative process in a budget bill.  Hearings  and
debates are not required if FFELP termination is included in a budget
bill or budget reconciliation instruction.  If Congress were to file a
stand-alone bill that specifically addresses the termination of FFELP,
this would allow hearings and debates to take place in order to discuss
the impact of the bill and the desire of constituents.
 
The best way to have your voice heard is to contact the delegation.  I
have attached a sample letter that was sent to the Arkansas association.
 They encouraged their members to contact their state delegation to have
them sign the letter and then send it to the Senate Committee on Budget.
 
 
Whatever your opinion is, I would encourage you to contact the Oklahoma
delegation to let them know how you feel.  It’s important that our
legislators know how those of us “in the trenches” feel about issues
that have a direct impact on us.
