[Oasfaa] FW: Students, Supporters Gather at State Capitol for Oklahoma's Promise Day (State Regents News Release With Photos and Cutlines)

FYI - Below is a link to a press release about yesterday's Oklahoma's Promise Day at the State Capitol.  A couple of photos are also attached.  Among the speakers at the rally were:


*         Mr. Mike Jackson, Executive Vice President of Government and Political Affairs for the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce.  Mr. Jackson was an OKPromise Scholarship recipient from the very first class of OKPromise high school graduates in 1996 (he said there were 8 students in his graduating class at Burlington High School in Alfalfa County).  Mr. Jackson graduated from Oklahoma State University and also served as a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 2004 -2014.



*         Our OKPromise student speaker was Ms. Sarah Kellogg, a college junior working on her nursing degree at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.  Ms. Kellogg's father died from cancer when she was in the fourth grade and her mother raised Sarah and her two older sisters as a single parent.  Both of Sarah's older sisters have also received the OKPromise scholarship, the eldest having earned a business degree and now working for Phillip's 66 and the middle sister preparing to graduate next month from the Radiologic Technology Program at Rose State College.  Ms. Kellogg said her experience with the nurses that cared for her father inspired her to pursue a career in nursing.

Other speakers included Sen. Jason Smalley (authored the legislation to increase the income limit for OKPromise in 2017), Rep. Cyndi Munson (former OKPromise recipient), Rep. Jadine Nollan (Chair of the House Higher Education and Career Tech Committee), Dara Derryberry (Deputy Attorney General representing Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter), and State Regent Mike Turpen.
