Job Summary
The director of student financial aid must remain current with both statutes and regulations governing the federal aid programs and will serve as chief officer in dealing with planning, development, administration and evaluation of SCCC student financial aid programs at the local, state, and federal levels. The individual will implement packaging polices, award student aid, monitor expenditures, resolve complex regulatory or subjective problems, provide positive leadership for timely review and implementation of policies and reporting procedures, make presentations to on and off campus audiences, and integrate enrollment management strategies into student financial aid operations.
Job Standards
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in business Management and/or Counseling preferred and student financial aid experience in a two-year college preferred. An Associate Degree and four years of work experience in student financial aid may be substituted for the Bachelor’s Degree.
Qualifications: Working with people, computer systems, financial counseling, and government regulations extremely beneficial. Valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions: Employee normally will be exposed to typical office conditions.
Physical/Mental Demands: The mental capacity to make decisions and follow through. The ability to interpret, express and exchange ideas; be able to sit or drive for long periods of time and lift and carry 25-50 lb loads over 50 yards. Maintain a valid driver’s license be able to drive in occasional inclement weather conditions. The mental ability to analyze situations and make decisions in a professional rational, and fair manner; the ability to remain calm in tense situations; the ability to maintain a consistent demeanor and a sense of humor.
Essential Functions:
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:
1. Provides all applicants and students with a clear outline of the services provided by the financial aid office, the staff’s willingness to help, and those areas in which the office and the staff have limited or no influence.
2. Assists high school guidance counselors in providing financial aid assistance and counseling for potential students.
3. Visits high schools and communities to be able to attract inquiries of potential students as well as provide the financial aid counseling and assistance they need in enrolling at SCCC.
4. Monitors communications with alumni involved in financial assistance.
5. Monitors contacts with prospective financial aid recipients.
6. Generates trip agendas as needed to market the role of financial aid in college attendance.
7. Tracks recruitment schedule and the financial aid package to enhance SCCC as first choice in student selection.
8. Generates regular reports on specific marketing activities.
9. Generates reports on prospective students to admissions office and serve on the marketing committee.
10. Monitors contacts with special groups of prospects i.e., athletes, minorities, national merits, etc..
11. Records comments from student interviews and focus groups.
12. Maintains expense account records.
13. Fields financial aid concerns from the SCCC student body and potential students.
14. Aids in retention by counseling contacts to insure renewal aid applications.
15. Schedules and conducts entrance and exit interviews for student loans. Assists loan applicants in their decisions about debt management.
16. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Relationships:
Internal: Reports directly to the Dean of Student Services. Works closely with Administrative and Educational Services. Rapport must be established, maintained and promoted with students, faculty, and staff.
External: Interact with members of the community to coordinate events and project a positive image of the college at all times.
