I enjoyed meeting many of you at the OASFAA conference last week. In case our paths didn't cross at the conference, I'd like to share with you some information about a key aspect of Oklahoma Money Matters (OKMM), the financial literacy initiative of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=JUSTIFY><FONT FACE="Arial Unicode MS">Recognizing the deficit in financial instruction and the considerable cost of fiscal illiteracy, OKMM will include an AmeriCorps Education Award Program, through which OKMM will place up to 500 AmeriCorps members in host sites around the state to educate youth and others about personal finance, student financial aid, and consumer credit. Through grassroots community involvement, members will impact Oklahoma’s economic future by promoting responsible spending, identification and achievement of long-term monetary goals, and investment in the future. OKMM AmeriCorps members will provide 300 hours of service through a one-year contract, for which they will earn a $1,000 education award that can be used to pay direct educational expenses, including repayment of student loans. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=JUSTIFY><FONT FACE="Arial Unicode MS">To advance this program, OKMM has commenced the site selection process. A site application is attached; applications are due by<U><B> November 1, 2004</B></U><B></B>. Participating volunteer sites will provide OKMM AmeriCorps members opportunities for direct, meaningful service in promoting financial literacy under the direct oversight of a site supervisor. A description of site supervisor responsibilities and sample member activities is also attached for your review. </FONT></P>
