<p>Apparently there was a webinar recently in which some viewers understood that schools do not have to check for PLUS defaults. I know mixed messages and conflicting answers never happen, but it's possible it did in this case.

<p>No. Self-certification is not acceptable, even if done via <a id="LPlnk775115" href="https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action" target="_blank">
studentloans.gov</a>. The school must still check NSLDS to ensure the parent borrower is not in default on any Title IV loans before you may originate a parent PLUS.</p>
