Subject: RBS invites you to the TIMSS Video Study conference
Importance: High

Hello,

Imagine the opportunity to observe a mathematics lesson in a different
country. What might you learn about the teaching and learning of
mathematics by viewing a lesson in Japan, Hong Kong, or Switzerland?

Research for Better Schools invites you to attend the TIMSS Video Study:
Examining Mathematics Teaching and Learning conference. Using the
recently-released TIMSS 1999 Video Study of Eighth Grade Mathematics
Lessons, this conference will feature mathematics lessons from several
participating countries.

When: August 6-7, 2003
Where: Newark/Wilmington, Delaware area (with easy access from I-95)
Registration: $195 for individuals; $170 per person for teams of two or
more.
Registration deadline: July 15, 2003

Dr. James Hiebert of the University of Delaware will be introducing the
conference. Dr. Hiebert is the lead author of the TIMSS1999 Video Study
Report, which examined 638 mathematics lessons in seven countries. With Dr.
Hiebert's participation, the conference offers a unique opportunity to view
several public release videos, discuss the lessons in small-group settings,
identify strategies used by other countries, and consider implications on
mathematics teaching and learning in the U.S.

This conference is appropriate for any educator interested in mathematics
teaching and learning. Educators who might take special interest in this
conference would include mathematics teachers (particularly middle school
mathematics teachers), mathematics curriculum specialists, professional
developers, and school/district/state administrators.

As part of registration, participants will receive the TIMSS 1999 Public
Release Videos (28 lessons; 25 hours) as well as the TIMSS 1999 Video Study
Report. In addition, breakfast, breaks, and lunch will be provided each
day.

Why haven't we listed the location? We are releasing the conference
registration form without an event location because many people have
requested registration information. We are still in the process of
finalizing our contract with the hotel site where the conference will be
held, so we cannot yet release that information. We do know that it will be
in the Newark/Wilmington area with easy access from I-95. Participants will
be responsible for arranging for and paying for their own travel and hotel.
For your preliminary budgeting, we can say that room rates will not be
higher than $145/night. The exact details of the hotel site will be
released as soon as possible. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Our registration form is pasted. Please note that participation is limited
to the first 100 paid participants, so please register soon. We look
forward to sharing this learning experience with you.

For more information, please contact Carol Crociante at crociante at rbs.org.
Our Web address for this conference will be available by or before May 30
at http://www.rbs.org/mathsci/timss/videoconf/index.shtml.

Thank you very much, and we look forward to working with you at the
conference.
