Stephen F. Austin State University is seeking an Assistant Director - Student Learning and Institutional Assessment.

General Description:

This is a professional position responsible for working cooperatively with faculty, staff, and administrators in the Office of Student Learning and Institutional Assessment and other university offices to develop effective assessment initiatives that will yield results applicable to the improvement of student learning and university operations. Responsible for establishing and maintaining assessment guidelines and standards and providing design and measurement expertise to ensure the quality of assessment throughout the university; supporting the coordination and implementation of student testing programs for assessment purposes; analyzing and interpreting testing data; and developing on-going relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators who support a culture of assessment. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This is a security-sensitive position. Reports to the Director of Student Learning and Institutional Assessment/Professor.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Establishes and maintains guidelines and standards for program assessment and related activities.
2. Maintains regular contact with faculty and staff involved in assessment to provide feedback on strengths and weaknesses in assessment plans, makes recommendations on evidence-based modifications, and carries out special projects and measurements as required.
3. Assists in coordinating, implementing, and administering various standardized tests.
4. Assists in reviewing and evaluating assessment plans and reports for quality and effectiveness. Provides feedback to appropriate faculty, staff, and administrators.
5. Gathers data into manageable computer files using appropriate software. Uses available software to clean data files and streamline the data management process.
6. Determines, in conjunction with others, the most appropriate statistical analyses for data sets. Conducts statistical analysis on data sets and interprets analyses for technical and non-technical users.
7. Collaborates with campus offices to produce institutional data that will inform analysis of student learning outcomes and organizational effectiveness.
8. Provides assistance as required to faculty, staff, and administrators needing support with assessment processes and the assessment management system.
9. Participates in, or leads, faculty and staff development workshops to support assessment processes.
10. Builds appropriate questionnaires by combining soundly constructed items with a user-oriented layout for paper-and-pencil, web-based, and telephone surveys. Writes and revises items, and designs layout for user-friendly questionnaires that are combined with current technology.
11. Assists faculty and staff with the design and implementation of focus groups for use in assessment.
12. Generates relevant research and evaluation questions; conducts library and internet searches for relevant theory to guide projects; determines the most appropriate methodology for study; and designs relevant data collection protocols.
13. Oversees and manages the university assessment management system; trains users and develops training materials as necessary.
14. Ensures effective communication between the university and relevant external agencies.
15. Prepares and presents oral presentations of research findings as needed for technical and non-technical audiences. Presents research to a variety of internal and external audiences as needed.
16. Prepares written reports of professional quality for dissemination within the university and to external agencies.
17. Represents the department in the absence of the director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
2. Knowledge of standard research and statistical procedures and techniques.
3. Knowledge of best practices in higher education assessment processes.
4. Skill in research design and analysis.
5. Skill in completing assignments accurately with attention to detail.
6. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
7. Ability to learn office and university-specific software.
8. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
9. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
10. Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with general supervision.
11. Ability to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and speak persuasively to implement effective assessment protocols.

Education:
Master's degree in statistics, research methodology, program evaluation, educational research, sociology, psychology, or a related field is required.

Experience and Training:
Two years of related experience is required. Experience conducting statistical analysis is required. Experience with assessment management systems is preferred.

Work Hours:
8 AM to 5 PM
Monday-Friday

Special Instructions: This position will have a start date of 9/1/2016.
