ECU uses Xitracs standards module for accreditation reports and uses the program module of yearly assessment reports but have not fully utilized the assessment module. I hoping someone would be willing to share their experience or best practices. If you use some other software and really love it please let me know the name of that software. Our University has two colleges (traditional and adult) and each college uses a common form. The two forms are very similar but word questions according to the college the course falls under. * Is the process done on paper or online or some combination? Since fall 2016, the process for both colleges is done online. Prior to fall 2016, our traditional college used paper end of course evaluations. * Do you survey students in every class every semester? Yes. * Can you share response rates for each of the formats (online vs. paper)? The response rates for the two colleges are different. For the adult college, response rates for the past three years is 20%. For the traditional college, the online submission rate for FA 16 and SP 17 is 65%. When we used paper copies, the response rate was 75%. * Is there an institutional policy about how much student feedback plays into reappointment, tenure, and promotion decisions? No. Faculty do present their responses during their annual performance review but we do not have a policy concerning those presentations. * Other things I should have asked and didn’t. We went to all-online responses for streamlining, accuracy, and lower overhead purposes. Additionally, online responses allow for us to provide student responses to faculty members as soon as grades are posted. Response rates will suffer but our belief is that since student surveys are indirect assessments, they are not as important in determining faculty effectiveness as whether or not students are meeting their program's learning outcomes. Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2017 19:07:16 +0000 Subject: [OK-AIR] Student rating of instruction Message-ID: Reply from OU: 1. Do you have a common form that is used for all classes? No, we have 23 evaluation forms. Each college chooses the content of their evaluation form. Some colleges have specific forms for specific course formats, i.e. labs. We also have the ability for custom supplemental questions per section, course, department, and college. 2. Is the process done on paper or online or some combination? Our course evaluations are completely online. 3. Do you survey students in every class every semester? Yes, we conduct course evaluations for every section offered, every semester. We do limit evaluations to sections that have two or more students enrolled and we do not evaluate thesis/dissertation, directed readings, or independent study courses. 4. Can you share response rates for each of the formats (online vs. paper)? The last time we conducted paper evaluations was in Fall 2009. Our overall response rate was 62%. Since we went completely online in Spring 2010, our average response rate is 54%. Slightly lower, but the quality of the data is SO much better. 5. Is there an institutional policy about how much student feedback plays into reappointment, tenure, and promotion decisions? There is a section of the tenure and promotion dossier to include course evaluation reports, but there is not institutional policy regarding how these reports are used specifically. 6. Other things I should have asked and didn’t. If you’re going digital, automate as much as possible. Up until last year we had 3 forms (f2f, online, and nursing), but they barely differed so I was able to convince the faculty to combine. At the same time, they changed the form from a really long form. We now only ask a minimal number of Likert-type questions, and about 5 open-ended questions * Is the process done on paper or online or some combination? – Fully online using Blackboard Enterprise Surveys. * Do you survey students in every class every semester? – Yes. * Can you share response rates for each of the formats (online vs. paper)? – It was before my time that we were doing it paper and pencil. But, our response rate has never been great. It was in the 40% area this last semester. * Is there an institutional policy about how much student feedback plays into reappointment, tenure, and promotion decisions? – Faculty have to reflect upon their results in their annual review. * Other things I should have asked and didn’t. – What system people use if it is online. We were using SmarEvals up until last year. But, the faculty weren’t in favor. We’ve started using Blackboard Enterprise Surveys as it is built into the system and doesn’t cost extra. It has its limitations, but it functions just fine for this and it’s tied directly into the course sites in BB. Any information you can provide will be appreciated. We’re just winding up our Assurance Argument for HLC, so I’ve been chained to my desk for a couple of weeks. Ugh! I’ve heard from eight schools on my questions about student rating of instruction (below). If anyone else want to respond, that would be welcome.
