Subject: COGR: Transportation of Animals

COGR has signed on to a letter being circulated by the National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR) related to airline transportation of research animals. COGR member institutions are encouraged to sign on as well. A copy of the draft letter has been posted to the COGR website for member-only access (see Latest News). The letter, to be sent to key airlines, encourages them to continue transporting animal models for biomedical research, despite pressure to stop. The letter was prompted by news that an ongoing campaign led by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was successful in pressuring UPS and FedEx to announce that they will no longer transport animals for laboratory use. The letter points out that thousands of research programs worldwide are dependent on the shipment of laboratory animals by air, and it calls on the airlines to continue to provide their shipment services for research animals. Institutions interested in signing the letter should contact Matt Bailey at NABR (mbailey at nabr.org<mailto:mbailey at nabr.org>) by Friday, December 7.
