New NORDP Webinar: Growing the Research Enterprise Through ‘Speed-Networking’

Presenters: Gretchen Kiser, University of California, San Francisco

                                        Angie Shotts, University of Alabama

Date: Thursday, December 3, 2015

Time: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. EST

Speed-networking is a fun and fast-paced way of bringing together researchers from different disciplines who otherwise might not meet. The goal is to provide a structured format in which researchers can explore new partnerships outside their usual group of collaborators, discuss research expertise, spark new approaches, and evaluate the potential for future collaboration.

  * What is the best way to structure a speed-networking event when different disciplines are represented?
  * How do you identify participants?
  * How do you encourage participation in an event that can be perceived as “soft?”
  * What can be done to ensure quality connections?
  * How do you modify the standard speed-networking model?
  * How do you deal with last minute participant changes (cancellations, late-comers, or “early-leavers”)?

The presenters will share various models of speed-networking events that have worked well at very different institutions. They will take you through the nuts and bolts of “how-to”, share lessons learned, as well as best practices, and welcome a lively Q&A time. Having a solid plan and anticipating “hiccups” will ensure a productive (and enjoyable!) session for your faculty and foster the development of new collaborations.

Gretchen L. Kiser, Ph.D., has a diverse research background in genetics, genomics, and molecular biology, including several years in biotech industry product development and as a private technical process and writing consultant. She is the Director of the Research Development Office (RDO) at the University of California San Francisco. In this role, she supports institutional research goals and strategic research initiatives broadly, leading a professional team that employs innovative team science methods toward fostering development of new collaborations and innovative approaches, and facilitates development of large, complex multi-investigator research proposals, and that manages the strategic distribution of intramural research funds and the selection of campus limited submission funding opportunity nominees.

Gretchen is also currently the Vice President of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP).

Angie Shotts, LCSW, is the Coordinator of Research Support at the University of Alabama. Angela has been serving the UA faculty with Research Development activities since 2010. In addition to facilitating 2-3 speed-networking sessions per semester, she also manages an internal funding program, the limited submission process, and coordinates several faculty research interest groups.
