[OklahomaIndianStudies] Meeting of American Indian Studies Association (or whatever we may call ourselves)

Dear Colleagues,

You probably wondered what had happened to the coordination concerning our
proposed meeting. My last communication in early October explained that it
would be a week or two before I would start coordination because of my
mother's funeral. Unfortunately, two days after the funeral I was in the
hospital and have since had a kidney removed due to cancer. This was all
very unexpected. However, I am back to work this semester and am feeling at
least 75% or so my normal healthy self.

So, let's get busy starting our association!

There are roughly 4 things I would like to solicit from each of you to get
things started.

1.	When would be a good time ( or bad times ) for the meeting? Since
we are academics, for some of us days of the week might be important. For
example, I would prefer Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays and can't really meet
the first three weeks of April. So, what are each of your preferences?
2.	What agenda items would you suggest?
3.	Who would like to volunteer for a Committee on Formal Structure?
Here I am thinking about our incorporation as a 501c3 or other entity. This
committee should be made up of folks that have helped start relevantly
similar organizations. They would probably begin by advising as to what
kind of entity the association should be and then they would function as a
constitution/bylaws committee. With luck, these committee members would
have some e-mail or other discussions prior to the Association meeting and
be able to present their conclusions at the Association meeting to be taken
up by the group as a whole.
4.	Who would like to volunteer for a Committee on Funding? Hopefully,
some of you have some experience in obtaining funding for similar
organizations. If so, please volunteer. Clearly there may be some overlap
between this and the other committee and the two should probably be in
communication. This committee might also brainstorm some on what our needs
might be as well as how we might meet these needs. Like the Committee on
Formal Structure, they might have a tentative report ready for the
association meeting. People should feel free to be on both committees if
they so desire.

The above is meant to get us started. Nothing is "written in stone." It is
my hope that these items will enable us to have a fruitful first meeting.

Thanks,

Lee Hester
