An online report from SREB] Postsecondary Readiness Policies Along the Path from High School to College and Careers February 27, 2020 — Students need a smooth path from the middle grades into high school, and then on to college, technical education programs and careers. How are states aligning their policies to make this happen? An online tool from SREB details policies across this spectrum so government and education leaders can compare across state lines, identify barriers where requirements don't align, and find ideas to improve access and equity for all students. The report shows how states have included readiness in their assessment and accountability systems, aligned high school graduation and college admission requirements, and offered more college and career planning. "What's next, after high school?" asks SREB President Stephen Pruitt. "Each student should see a clear system of on- and off-ramps that allows them to pursue their dreams.” Explore your state's policies on one page [Find Policies by State for high school success, college readiness and postsecondary completion. Browse by state.] Or browse policies on these topics for the 16 SREB states Definitions of college and career readiness A well-defined, shared vision for what it means to be college and career ready is important to prepare students for their options after high school. Planning for college and career in K-12 In many SREB states, planning for graduation, college and careers begins in the middle grades. High school graduation requirements How many courses does the state require in each subject? What assessments are required? Policies for placing students into college-level coursework Who decides ─ and how ─ whether students are placed into college-credit or remedial courses? State financial aid for undergraduates More states now have a mix of need- and merit-based aid. Feedback from postsecondary to K-12 How K-12 and postsecondary agencies share information about student attendance and performance. “Our partners in states often request this information, and now we’re publishing it in one easy format,” says Jeff Gagne, SREB director of policy analysis. “We hope it will help them see any road bumps they could eliminate.” A Path to College and Career: Stepping Stones for States Read the blog post from SREB Policy Analyst Meagan Crowe > High School to College and Careers tracks how state policies line up to promote smooth transitions for students after high school. NC-SARA’s goal is to bring some efficiency to assist institutions in providing clearer and more accurate disclosures to all students. The data shows that most of the programs leading to licensure among participating institutions are in five fields: teacher education, nursing, counseling, social work, and psychology. NC-SARA and SREB asked each SARA state to provide general contact information for these five licensure boards, which will be housed and managed centrally through the NC-SARA website. If you have not provided this information via the google docs spreadsheet that was emailed from SREB on January 22, 2020, please let us know so your state’s information can be uploaded to NC-SARA. Save the Date S-SARA’s June 2020 RSC Meeting is June 2-3, 2020, at the AC Marriott Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. The states due for renewal are Delaware, District of Columbia, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and South Carolina. This week those SPEs received their 90-day notice for renewal. This event opens Tuesday, June 2nd with a brief afternoon meeting for SPEs, followed by the traditional welcome dinner. Wednesday, June 3rd is the formal meeting starting with breakfast, then an all-day meeting culminating around 3 p.m. The logistics memo with formal registration information will follow later. NC-SARA Updates Inaugural Strategic Plan on the Horizon On Friday, February 21, 2020, NC-SARA announced that it is actively developing an inaugural strategic plan to guide the organization’s work over the next three years. The strategic plan is expected to be released in the coming months. Lori Williams, NC-SARA President, encouraged compacts to keep states in the loop of NC-SARA’s strategic planning. Should you have questions, please direct them to SREB to be forwarded to NC-SARA. In the meantime, the full announcement for the NC-SARA Inaugural Strategic Plan is posted on NC-SARA’s website. National Cost Savings Study Commissioned for 2020 Much like SREB’s Cost Savings Analysis conducted in 2018, NC-SARA contracted the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS) to conduct a cost savings analysis for institutions that take part in SARA. NCHEMS began working on this project earlier this month and expects that it will conclude by mid-August 2020. They anticipate having NCHEMS staff present their findings at the September 2020 State Portal Annual Meeting.
