But when it comes to state policies that affect  the teacher workforce, it’s important to see both the forest and the trees. Short-term solutions — emergency certifications, larger class sizes, recruiting retired educators — can come at the expense of policies that retain teachers by improving the profession.

And they should put communications plans in place for each milestone in the fall, from reopening to elections to graduation and testing, Widmeyer Communications experts told the SREB K-12 Education Recovery Task Force.

Be clear, friendly, and most of all empathetic: Students and their families are dealing with job loss, illness and other sources of anxiety on top of being away from school for months.
