We are working with the Chickasha police department to try and put a stop to this most recent rash of thefts. This is not the first time we have had this problem. The perpetrators may be different, but the situation is the same. Small groups of people move through the parking lots at night and check vehicle doors. They usually have backpacks and are usually on bicycles or on foot. When they find an unlocked vehicle, they root around inside and steal whatever they can. If there are larger items in the vehicle, they will return later to take those. I would like to ask that you, as residents, keep your eyes out for any suspicious persons or behaviors and contact security immediately at (405) 222-8066 if you do. Most activity has been taking place in the parking lot on the East side of Shackelford Hall. You can help prevent items from being stolen from your vehicle by locking your vehicle. I would also recommend not keeping anything of value in your vehicle. I also encourage everyone to keep their residence doors locked. Even though we have a security officer on duty 24/7, we can't be everywhere and see everything, all the time. We rely on you to alert us to situations that may need our attention. The safety of our campus is a group effort that we all contribute to. With that, I want to ask everyone with a vehicle on campus to please get a parking permit. I realize the semester is nearly over, but for those of you returning, it would be a big help. We primarily use your permit to contact you if there is an issue with your vehicle. Sometimes we may need a vehicle moved even though it's in a legal spot. An example of this was when a crane was brought in to lift a new air-conditioner onto Nash library and we wanted to make sure no one's vehicle got crushed. Sometimes we want to alert you that you are parked in an illegal spot and give you an opportunity to move your vehicle without repercussion. Maybe you didn't realize you were parked illegally and we want to give you an opportunity to correct the situation. We may also contact you to let you know that your lights are on or a door is ajar. Finally, I want to address handicap parking spaces. I realize it may seem as though no one "needs" a handicap parking space at present. The issue is that no one can anticipate someone else's need for one of those spaces. When we use those spaces, and we don't need them, we are announcing that our convenience is more important than access for the disabled. I realize that we sometimes experience temporary injuries and getting a handicap parking permit is an inconvenience. If this is the case, we will be happy to work with you on a solution. Thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As most of you know, Robertson residents are allowed to stay on campus during the winter break. Please be mindful that food services will not be operating after Finals Week. If you leave your room for an extended period of time, please make sure you take out your trash, turn off lights, etc. IF YOU ARE NOT RETURNING IN THE SPRING: If you will not be returning in the Spring, you will need to complete a Housing Contract Cancellation Form, located here, and complete a formal check-out with a Housing staff member. Please email myself directly or housing at usao.edu to schedule your check out. As a reminder, there are 24-hour quiet hours during finals week, so please be mindful as your fellow classmates will be studying. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Have a great weekend and good luck on your finals!!!
