[Counselors] Enrolling Elementary Student from Homeschool

I have done both of these.
1.  Have the Sp. Ed director do a mini Woodcock assessment....this will give grade level.  Put in appropriate grade.
2.  Have a comprehensive 6 grade 1st sem. final in the core classes.  If he has an average or above score, he may be placed in 6th grade.  ( I know people who won't place them if they don't have a 90+ on the assessment.  We let kids pass who have a 60, so I don't agree with the 90+)

I think the Woodcock assessment is more accurate.



I had that situation last year.  We had a student enroll that dropped out in the first grade, but was old enough to be in the 5th grade.  After speaking to our District Administrators, I was advised to put him in the Fourth Grade.  We would send him to a Second Grade class to learn math  or another subject but was mainly in the Fourth Grade.  If you put him in the lower Grade he is more likely to become a drop out.  Our student made great progress during the year.  You just have to have very patient teachers that are willing to work as a team for the student.
