[Counselors] Teen dating awareness month

 The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Family Violence Prevention Program  (MCN FVPP) would like inform you that February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.  MCN FVPP is dedicated to working with youth and educating them on safe dates and healthy relationships to prevent abusive relationships.  

In 2011, high school students were surveyed by the Oklahoma Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and found that
•         7% of students had been hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the last 12 months. 
Students  who had been physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend reported the following problems more often than students who had not been abused
•         Depression in the last 12 months, 47% vs. 27%
•         Using alcohol in the last 30 days, 73% vs. 36%

Katie Kelley, MCN FVPP Youth Advocate provides teen dating violence education to schools within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation jurisdiction, tribal community centers, youth organizations, and churches.  Ms. Kelley would like to collaborate with JOM coordinator Kayla Chupco about sitting up an information booth during lunch hours to promote healthy relationships.  The booth provides information on how to help a friend in an abusive relationship, relationship quizzes, Dating Violence Pledge and GIVEAWAYS for the students.
