[Counselors] FW: Non English Speaking Students

A question along the same lines... Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with the EL kids that cannot pass the 8th grade reading test or alternative test to get their DMV letter for their license?  We've had kids move in from Mexico that were born here and have their US citizenship, but cannot speak or read the language at a level proficient enough to get their license.  Are there any new exceptions or accommodations that we can use for these kids that I am not aware of?   Thanks!

I would also suggest free ELL classes at Capital Hill Center in OKC that are free. There may be resources at UCO. You might check with their ELL department.

Hi Kay:  I am at Enid HS and we have a full-blown EL program and enough kids to help translate in classes for the new ones that come in.   I don't know how we could help, but if there is something we can share I am more than happy to do it.   I am not the EL Coordinator, but she is a friend.

We are a very small school district and we just had two high school students enroll that speak no English.  We do not even have a local foreign language taught here (ours are taught through Edgenuity).  We also do not have any students that speak Spanish fluently.  Do any of  you have a similar situation and how do you teach them?
