After attending a student/parent handbook workshop, and some changes from the Health Department – we had to change our policy. Lice and nits are not life threatening (as we were told in the workshop), if a student has lice, a parent is notified and the child is sent home. If the child has clearly been treated with medication, we will NOT deny the student to return. We encourage an all clear note from the health department but we do not require it.

After several years of discussion and local health department and health care providers not agreeing with our no nit, no lice policy we changed our policy this year to just no live lice. The following is in our elementary handbook:

Our district policy prohibits any student from attending classes are participating in school sponsored activities until a student is free of head lice and nits.

Any student prohibited from attending school due to head lice shall present certification from a health professional that the student is no longer afflicted with head lice and may be subject to a check by school personnel.

We are looking at changing our head lice policy. Would you mind sharing your head lice policy?
What do you have in writing? Thanks in advance.
