Good afternoon,

In response to a question from the United States Department of Education,
Federal Student Aid (FSA), NASSGAP is contacting states to inquire about
any plans to participate in the Application Programming Interface (API)
with the FAFSA.  Specifically, in a presentation at the recent NASSGAP
conference (October 22, 2015), FSA staff asked if there are any states
beyond the nine currently participating who are interested in using the
API.  If so, FSA will need to secure OMB review, and they have requested
that NASSGAP notify them if it appears new states wish to participate so
they can determine if they need to seek such review.

FSA’s API allows states to include a link from the FAFSA on the Web site
that takes students directly from the FAFSA online to the state’s grant
application, if the state has a separate online application in addition to
the FAFSA. Participation in API includes state responsibility for
programming and meeting a number of specific requirements.  You can learn
more about API by reading the federal participation agreement, available
online at
http://ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/attachments/20142015StateAPIServiceAgreement.pdf
, or by reading the original FSA solicitation for state participation, at
https://www.google.com/search?q=fafsa
+api&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&gws_rd=ssl#q=fafsa

.

If your state is planning to apply for API participation for the 16/17 or
17/18 FAFSA years, please respond to Susan Degen or Jason Chavez so NASSGAP
can respond to FSA’s question with an estimated number of new participants.

Best regards,
