[Oasfaa] confusion caused...

Apparently there was a webinar recently in which some viewers understood that schools do not have to check for PLUS defaults. I know mixed messages and conflicting answers never happen, but it's possible it did in this case. [😁]


So, I looked it up on askregs to see what it said and this is what I found. (Don't shoot the messenger.)


Is the Self-Certification on StudentLoans.gov Sufficient for Verifying a Parent PLUS Borrower's Default Status?

No. Self-certification is not acceptable, even if done via studentloans.gov<https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action>. The school must still check NSLDS to ensure the parent borrower is not in default on any Title IV loans before you may originate a parent PLUS.
