I am not attending NASFAA; however, I am not implementing year round Pell until an ED staffer makes a presentation at NASFAA and hopefully provides more detail.

Any information brought back by attendees and shared will be appreciated.

Thanks Ya'll

So................how many of you counted up to see if you are eligible for retirement when you saw this electronic announcement????? I have already given my word to stay two more years.............LOL

Our Summer term began May 30th. It would have been nice to have had this a little earlier for students who have used all of their Pell and did not enroll for summer 17 because they couldn't afford it. Also, students who have already been packaged and have loans disbursed etc could now be overawarded!! I can think of all kinds of things we need to be looking at.

A webinar from the Dept of Ed would be nice right now.

Oh my! We are going to listen closely at NASFAA next week and then take whatever action we need to in July.

I’ve copied below some email conversation on this topic from a closed group listserve that I am on as a FYI.

It sure seems to me that the letter implies we should be giving students additional Pell in 2017 summer.

My team is worried about getting a group of students permanently off-cycle with the system for summer awards where we think they will have to be packaged manually. Like Ted I'm not sure how we could argue the students interest there (vs just a small difference in amount) Is there some automated way to handle this in PeopleSoft? Our old system had a special set of screens but I'm not finding them if they exist in PS.

On a related note, is anyone planning to give summer 2017 Pell to new students (admits for fall) who enroll at your campus half time this summer?

Thanks,
Rachelle

Alicia,

We have been reviewing and it appears under certain conditions there is a requirement to pay students this summer using the 2017-18 FAFSA information. But we are unclear on what the Department means by ‘in the best interest of the student’. That appears ambiguous to us. Can anyone help clarify?

Also since the regulation goes into effect July 1 we plan to wait till then to make the additional Pell awards for this summer.

Thanks,

Good morning,

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the Year-Round Pell notice that came out this week?

One critical piece is listed below.

As noted, this provision is effective beginning with the 2017–2018 award year. Thus, an eligible student who is enrolled in the summer 2017 crossover payment period that the institution assigned to the waning 2016–2017 award year may not receive Pell Grant funds beyond 100 percent of the student’s Pell Grant Scheduled Award for the 2016–2017 award year. However, a student who has exhausted his or her Pell Grant eligibility for the 2016–2017 award year and who is enrolling in the summer of 2017 should receive a Pell Grant award for summer based on their 2017–2018 Pell eligibility because the student will have additional eligibility later in the 2017–2018 award year.

After 29 years of Fun, Frolic and Title IV Funds, I have decided to hang up my OCAP dress shoes! Yep, on June 30, 2017, I will be officially retiring from the Oklahoma College Assistance Program. I would like to thank my OASFAA friends and colleagues for making my career wonderful, rewarding, and fulfilling!

Most of all I will miss the camaraderie and conversations I've had with my many friends in the OASFAA community, which were occasionally creative, philosophical, stimulating, and sometimes rambling but always ENTERTAINING!

Hopefully in my next Chapter of Life (New Job - still searching) I will have the opportunity in business or personal life for us to cross paths again.

It is with great pleasure that I was able to work with all of you. I'll miss you guys!

You can contact me personally at waynesparks405 at gmail.com<mailto:waynesparks405 at gmail.com> or on my cell at 405-317-3371. But most importantly, if you need help at OCAP where you used to dial my number, you should call Mary Heid at 405-234-4489 or email her at mheid at ocap.org!

Sincerely,

Wayne Sparks
Future Retiree
