The 12th Annual Reading Conference hosted by the Oklahoma Teacher Connection is almost here!  We are super excited to bring you a literacy packed day that will be held at the beautiful campus of Oklahoma City University on September 20th.  This year there will be two phenomenal keynote speakers, Dr. Suzii Parsons and Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Willner, as well as amazing breakout speakers!

Key Note Speakers Information:

Dr. Suzii Parsons is the Jacques Munroe Professor of Reading and Literacy Education at Oklahoma State University. Her passionate belief that all learners deserve a voice in this world and outstanding teachers to foster their growth is reflected in her scholarship on dialogue as pedagogy, diverse perspectives in literature for children and young adults, and teacher preparation. Dr. Parsons spends many hours in public schools as the director of OSU-ExCEL, a full-year mentor program for teacher candidates, and as a professional development facilitator. A strong believer in the power of literature to transform lives, she is the President of the International Literacy Association Children's Literature and Reading Special Interest Group and has served on a variety of book award committees including the ILA Children's and Young Adult Book Award, the Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children, and Notable Books for a Global Society. Most recently she was selected and served as a jurist for the 2019 Lee Bennet Hopkins Poetry Award. Dr. Parsons has received a variety of teaching honors including the OSU Regent's Distinguished Teaching Award (twice awarded), the Mortar Board Golden Torch Award, the OSU College of Education Teaching Excellence Award, the OSU Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award, and OSU Faculty Teaching Fellow.

Elementary Philosophers Explore the BIG Questions Through Diverse Children's Literature

Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Willner is an Education Professor and Director of Teacher Education at Oklahoma City University. In addition to educating future teachers, her scholarship includes teacher education, literacy instruction, and children's literature. Collaborating with her fabulous Oklahoma colleagues, she has presented at conferences in the United States, Sweden, Estonia, South Korea, and Spain. She is lucky enough to have the opportunity to read with kindergartners each week at Positive Tomorrows, a school for children who are homeless. Liz has been a nose-twitching reader since second grade and can be found losing herself in books at home, at work, and even in public places. For the past few years, she has been exploring philosophy with children based on picture books, and she'll share her learning with the audience.
