Subject: Discussion on Student Accident Shield Program

Business Officers,

Northern Oklahoma College is currently participating in a student accident insurance program for its student-athletes this academic year. "Student Accident Shield" provides our student-athletes with 24-Hour Accident Coverage as well as coverage for intercollegiate sports accidents. A summary of the program is attached. While this program has been very beneficial for our student-athletes, NOC and its Board believe that the "Student Accident Shield" program would also benefit all of our full-time traditional students.

A few weeks ago in Oklahoma City an impromptu "fact-finding" committee made up of Vice Presidents from Seminole State College, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, Rogers State University and Northern Oklahoma College discussed in detail the "Student Accident Shield" program. Our primary objectives during the discussion were to determine if "Student Accident Shield" would be beneficial for our students, reduce institutional expenses regarding basic athletic accident insurance premiums and ascertain if a type of student-fee to offset the cost of the plan is justifiable. In short, the group agreed that "Student Accident Shield" would be beneficial for our students and should reduce our athletic insurance expenses but still has questions about establishing a mandatory fee for all of our students to offset the expense or considering an academic service fee for a specific group of students.

During the meeting, a representative from Specialty Insurance Solutions presented estimated pricing for the program both individually to our institutions and what it would be if a grouping of Oklahoma colleges and universities agreed to participate as a consortium. While it would depend on the institutions that agreed to participate in a consortium, premiums could be as low as $10 per student for 12 months of coverage.

The Committee agreed that a logical next step would be to discuss the "Student Accident Shield" program with other Oklahoma institutions after the Business Officers and OKHEEI Group meetings in December. Not only do we want to find out what other Oklahoma colleges may be interested in the program but also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of a program that would require Board approval for another fee to our students.

I look forward to our discussion with those institutions that are interested in the program.

Sincerely,

Anita Simpson
