[Counselors] Concurrent Scheduling Question - Responses

Hello,
I’m reaching out to learn how you schedule students who are taking concurrent courses online. Do these students have a designated period during the school day where they are on your campus in a classroom with a teacher or monitor? Alternatively, are they permitted to be off campus during their online concurrent hours, such as at the beginning or end of the day?
Currently, we require our students to remain on campus during their online concurrent period with a monitor present. However, we are evaluating whether this is the most effective use of faculty/staff time and are exploring other possible approaches.
We would greatly appreciate hearing how your school handles this and what has been most successful for you.

We have a concurrent room available if they want to work or they can work in our library, but we do not require them to be on campus during their concurrent online hour, which is scheduled into their day.

We have both.  I have a few seniors that actually stay in the library or even in the office foyer and work on their concurrent online class.  There is not a monitor or supervisor.  Most of mine are off campus (at their house) doing their online work.

I have been at schools that do both. I feel it is more effective when they are off campus and it is scheduled first or last hour. I have seen problems arise when it is on campus, whether the student is roaming or a person is pulled away from something else to "babysit" one or two students. Our concurrent students work in the library with the librarian and her aide. They are not required to take concurrent classes during a specific period, and they are required to remain on campus.

I have worked at schools where the students had to be on campus, and I have worked at schools where they encouraged students to leave campus because of supervision issues. Off-campus time should be documented in writing with parent approval.

All of our concurrent students are off campus during that time no matter if they go to the college for a class or if they are doing it online.  This is the way it has been for 5 years now and it works fine for us.  Of course, we have a parent sign a form that describes all of this so we have proof that they are aware that their child will not be on our campus during their concurrent classes.

We give release hours for concurrent students, similar to work release hours for those in Agri-business.

We give them a class period per concurrent class. Last year our principal allowed them to leave campus. He started letting only seniors leave campus 1st semester then 2nd semester he allowed juniors to leave campus for their concurrent hour as well.  Same goes this year juniors and seniors may leave campus during their concurrent period!

Our juniors are given an hour in the day with a monitor on campus.  The seniors are allowed to be on or off campus.  The parents have to sign a form stating they understand that they are responsible for their child during the hours that the student is off campus.   They are given 1 class period per concurrent class they are enrolled in.  We have not had students take in-person concurrent classes in quite some time.  It's just not feasible, due to the amount of travel time it would take. Hope that helps.

At Clinton High School, we currently handle concurrent scheduling with a focus on balancing student independence with a strong safety net. Here is our current approach:

Scheduling: Whenever possible, we schedule these at the beginning or end of the school day to allow for maximum flexibility.
Location: Students are permitted to leave campus during these periods. While we don't currently require them to be in a monitored classroom (though we are evaluating this for next year), many students choose to utilize the school library to stay on-site.
Accountability & Support: I require concurrent students to check in with me once a week to show me their current grades. This allows us to intervene early if they are struggling or determine if they need to drop a course before deadlines pass. We treat this structure like a safety net—it provides them with the independence they’ll need in college while ensuring they have the support they need to be successful before they are navigating these courses entirely on their own. Each semester, we tweak this process to better help our students balance their college coursework and life in general.
