Breaking Down Silos to Reach Campus Diversion and Sustainability Goals

Dear GreenBiz Subscriber,

Colleges and universities have widely embraced sustainability goals and commitments, from climate action plans to zero-waste goals, for a wide range of reasons including reducing costs, engaging students and communities, environmental protection, acting as a responsible leadership institution and brand enhancement.

But educational institutions - like their corporate counterparts - often face barriers in bringing together the various internal players needed to address and achieve environmental goals and establish system-wide practices around materials management and procurement to drive diversion goals. For example, should recycling and composting be "owned" by the campus sustainability director or the head of facilities? What are the roles of procurement, human resources, and other departments - not to mention student organizations? Campuses that fail to break through organizational silos often undercut their ambitious goals and good intentions.

That need not be the case. By mobilizing the team to bridge cultural and operational gaps, and partnering effectively with materials management system experts, campuses can lead to measurable results that achieve, even exceed, goals and commitments.

In this free, one-hour webcast, you will learn about the Think Green Campus Model, including real-world case studies that have helped campuses overcome institutional barriers to achieving diversion and sustainability goals. You will also learn how:

  * The University of Iowa is successfully collaborating across departments and functions in pursuit of its 2020 diversion and sustainability goals.

  * Leadership can help to break down silos.

  * To detect "silo issues" and course correct to impact program performance.

  * To successfully identify green partners with the expertise required to positively contribute to your campus environment.

  * To measure, report and consolidate results from joint efforts
